  • Having friends from all over the world

On my recent travels, I had a lot of firsts. First international trip abroad by myself. First time in Barcelona, Spain. First time I broke a camera. But, one interesting first I found happening a lot was the first time I met someone from a different country.

When you stay in a hostel, you meet people from all over the world. I met my first Australian, Swiss and Kiwi. (Kiwi= New Zealander)

I really doubt I was the first American they met. Nonetheless, it's shocking that there are some nationalities or backgrounds I haven't met, considering New York City is mixed with so many tourists and visitors.

When I was a kid, I grew up in the Upper East Side (Imagine Gossip Girls) even though I didn't live there (Kind of like Jenny Humphrey) so I picked up on the style, language and attitude of the area. As I grew older, many people didn't think I was Hispanic at all because of the way I dressed, spoke and what I was interested in. I spoke fluent Spanish, but I did not have an accent at all.

My mom always jokes around that when I was a kid, I had a lot of Asian friends and that is why I was so focused in school. Present day, I enjoy having friends from all over. My best friend is from Russia and I love hearing her stories from back home before she came to America. Having friends from all around the world make for great conversation and a great excuse to visit a country.

Do you have friends from different nationalities? Are there certain groups of people you've never met or always wanted to?

Might seem silly but I'd like to meet people from every country. I plan on traveling a lot after I graduate & volunteering abroad so it's completely possible.  I'm Guyanese but I don't have a lot of Guyanese friends. I'm not sure why. Most of my friends are either from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka or somewhere around there.

I have friends from many different places. In High School, I had a lot of Asian friends. One had moved from Korea 2 years prior to our meeting and another had moved from China when she was very young. In college, I have met many hispanics - Puerto Ricans, Mexicans, and Colombians mainly. Though, I have met a Spaniard and a Dominican as well. I have also met an American who lived in Japan for 5 years, so her stories are interesting. I have met a German or two as well. All of these on my own college campus. Traveling, I've met a lot of other people though - sometimes wihle skiing in Colorado you meet a lot of internationals who come for an American ski experience. I've met some English and Scottish people there. In my own hometown, I've met some English and German people. And then traveling...obv. met a lot of English in England and Dominicans in the Dominican Republic. And Mexicans in Mexico...haha

Yup, I have friends from Korea, China, Philippine, England, USA, India, Singapore, etc. And I love having new friends, at first just to learn the languages (I love foreign languages) and fall in love to communicate with them all. World is so big!
