Match Up Monday: MoMA vs. The Met
As the season gets jolly, New York gets congested with even more people. The holiday season means extra hours at retail stores and tourists on vacation to get a glimpse of the holiday spirit in New York.
I've bumped into so many families asking me what the better museums are. With limited time on shorter vacations, you want to check out the best of the best. Luckily, New York is chock full of museums. (And nuts) Today's Match-Up will look at two famous New York museums: The MoMA (The Museum of Modern Art) and the Met (The Metropolitan Museum of Art)
MoMA :
- Located on 53rd Street between 5th and 6th avenues in Midtown Manhattan.
- As said in the name, it is a collection of modern art.
- Doors first opened in 1929 under the development of the Rockerfellers.
- Has a collection of more than 150,000 individual pieces including The Starry Night by Vincent van Gough and The Persistence of Memory or Melting Clocks by Salvador Dali.
- In the early 2000's, the museum went under major construction and also opened a collection in Queens. However, admission prices skyrocketed from $12 to $20.
- You can visit the MoMA for free on Fridays after 4pm, thanks to Target.

- An art museum located on the East side of Central Park on Museum Mile on 82nd Street and 5th avenue.
- Holds a permanent collection of two million works of art from Classics, Ancient Egypt to Islamic Art.
- Was founded in 1870 by American citizens who wanted to display art and the American people.
- The Met is featured a lot in pop culture. On Friends, Joey takes Charlies to the museum to try to impress her. On Gossip Girl, Serena and Blair often eat lunch on the steps of the Met.
- One can find recognizable pieces such as Vincent van Gough's Self-Portrait with a Straw Hat, The Dreamer by Pablo Picasso and Madonna by Salvador Dali.
- There is a Medieval collection located in The Cloisters in Upper Manhattan.

It's funny to say I have been to the Met millions of times on school trips, but I can't recall actually visiting the MoMA. Perhaps this will be my New Years Resolution.
Which museum catches your eye? Have you been to either or and if so which do you prefer?

i've recently been to both (history extra credit ftw)
and i have to say... i feel really bad about not making a donation to the met.
so moma ftw! i love free things. also, the egyptian/medieval sections of the met scare the crap out of me.
modern art is so much easier to admire and appreciate. :]
i gotta go moma. as an art history major, i went to the met *a lot* in the past 4 years...
as an obsessive follower of design/decor/ambiance, i hit up the moma enough to know that the moma had better lighting, better atmosphere, and unlike the met, essentially no one inside the moma seems to be/acts like they've been forced to be there
though i would eat lunch on the steps of the met, it def has the best steps of all nyc museums =)
I've been to both, the MoMA is more interesting but the Met is free since those are just suggested donation prices. Also my grandpa is a member, so if we go with him we get in for free. The MoMA is pretty expensive! I only went because my friend got a discount for it as a job benefit and she took us there.
museum of natural history is where it's at! the met is a close second.
i'm not a fan of modern art, so never ventured inside MOMA before.
I've only been to the Met, and it's so beautiful. I'd go to both in a heart beat though...ahh, I miss NYC!
