  • LangLearner Translator on Windows Marketplace

If you remember seeing Dan’s demo of the LangLearner Lite application from the Windows Mobile MarketPlace, the LangLearner Translator will look a bit familiar. It’s made by the same people, but offers different functionality. Where the regular LangLearner application only allows you to select phrases that you want to translate, the LangLearner Translator lets you type in any phrase you want. The advantage to the Translator is that you can type in any type of phrase that you want. The disadvantage is that it uses server-based software to generate the translations where as LangLearner Lite’s translations were created by four native speakers for each language.

In addition to showing you the translated text, LangLearner Translator will download audio pronunciations of the translated phrase and allow you to play it on your Windows Phone. Another great feature is the Translation History. You can set the software to keep a certain number of phrase translations in your main memory. This allows you to bring up your favorite phrases and play the pronunciations back without having to access the server over the internet to re-translate. Obviously, this can be very useful for travelers, especially if you know you’ll be visiting areas with poor internet reception.

You may have seen programs like this on other platforms using very robotic text-to-speech pronunciations. This is not like that at all. LangLearner’s pronunciations seem to be very close to actual native speakers.

LangLearner Translator can be found on the Windows Mobile Marketplace for $4.99.

Would you use this to help translate while on the go?
