If you're traveling to Bangkok, Thailand anytime soon, make sure you aren't trashy. Of course, don't only mean to not dress provocatively, but to throw away your trash.
Residents and tourists will be fined starting December 1st, 2009 for littering in Bangkok. Fines can go from Bt1,000 and Bt10,000. ($30-$300) per offense.
Trash on the streets are starting to pile up in this huge tourist city. With visitors and residents in the numbers of 10 million inhabitants, it is difficult to keep the streets clean. This is an initiative to moving forward to a cleaner Bangkok. The biggest problem? Dropping cigarette butts on the street.
In NYC, a program like this would be laughed at. Many attempts have been made to keep the city clean, but it seems almost impossible. Especially, in areas where poverty and crime are at the highest.
Also, I feel like there are less garbage cans on the street corners lately. Sometimes, I need to throw something away and I'll be holding on to it for an extra block.
It would be great if something like this could really happen. A cleaner city, especially cleaner SUBWAY TRACKS would be a dream come true. Maybe the rats of the city will finally run away.
Do you think these fines are harsh? What does your city do to keep clean?Story Source Image Source

Ya,
I think that the only time most people will follow the law is if there is a huge fine hanging over there heads
People who litter drive me crazy! One time I was stopped at a red light as I was about to exit the mall I was working at when I glanced over to see the woman in the car next to me dump a fast food bag, two empty soda bottles, and an ashtray full of cigarette butts right into the street. I couldn't believe it. Does it really take that much effort to wait until you get home to clean the trash out of your car?
Anyway, I'm ranting. I don't think fines like that are harsh at all. It's just sad that people have to be threatened with fines in the first place to deter them from littering. =/
like randomcitizen said, that's the only time most people will follow the law. amen to that!
My city does nothing, except clean it up. Aha.
