Where else would I want to be for Christmas?
As Thanksgiving draws nearer I find myself getting more and more excited about the arrival of the holiday season. I am planning little trips, and buying tickets to shows, and marking my calendar off with great anticipation. You see I live in New York City, and really there is no place else to be for the holidays.
Can't be beat
I have been living in New York for my entire life and I can find something new to do for the holidays every year. First there are the obvious things like the tree at Rockefeller Center, Ice Skating at Central Park, Macy's Herald Square, and shopping on Fifth Avenue. But there are also tons of free live shows, tree lighting's at the South Street Seaport and the Met, Jazz at Lincoln Center, and so so much more. It cannot be beat!
But let's just say, hypothetically, that I did not live in the greatest city on earth. Where else might I like to spend the holidays? Here are my top five outside of NYC.
5. Prague
Prague is an ideal place to spend the holidays, with its fairy-tale-perfect Gothic towers and spires, cobblestone streets and Bohemian castles. I imagine it would give Christmas a pretty unique feel.
4. Disney World
Okay if there were one warm weather place I would want to go for Christmas it would be Disney. Only if I had kids though. I have had friends of mine rave about the holiday parade and all of the festivities. I think it would be nice to do one year.
3. Aspen
For one thing I would be almost guaranteed a White Christmas. Outside of that, I would love to spend Christmas in a cabin in Aspen, curled up by a fire, with a cup of hot chocolate in my hand. I am definitely doing this trip one year.
2. Lapland Finland
Okay since we are talking snow, how bout we kick it up a notch. Finnish Lapland is the best place to potentially spot the big guy in red. This province of Finland, just north of the Arctic Circle, is home to Santa Claus Village, Santa's Post Office and Santa Park in the town of Rovaniemi. Reindeer are abundant (on dinner plates, fashioned into bags, as well as running free outdoors), and the big attractions are sleigh rides, dogsleds, arctic safaris and the Northern Lights. It's the best thing short of spending Christmas in the North Pole.
1. London
If there is any city that can hold a candle to New York in this category it is London. London offers a unique blend of old world and new world charm that no other city can match. You can stay more in the city if you want the lights and the shopping and so forth. Or you can spring for the old style Dickensian type holiday, complete with Christmas goose and port wine. This is another trip I must take.
What other cities would you want to be for Christmas? Where are you spending your holiday this year?

Lapland ~ I'm thinking of reindeer steaks. Sorry Santa.
Im spending the holidays in Kentucky as always. I'd much rather spend it in New York. The pictures from the holidays in the big cities are BEAUTIFUL !
Japan!
Right here in LA with those that I love.
nyc .... nothing beats nyc
the north pole..right where santa is!
somewhere where there's snow and people to celebrate the occasion because there's no snow in my country. :(
all those places sound lovely! :)
i myself am taking my first winter trip to disney, for the holiday festivities, so I'll have to let you know how nice it is :)
Cool ideas.
I wish I could go to NYC for Christmas...or just at all. But I've only been in the spring once and the summer twice...so that would be a treat for sure.
I've London my whole life, and Christmas in London is special, only thing missing is good old snow on the very day, to really set the mood.
Wow! That is such a lovely list! I want to go to all of those places! :)
Ive always wanted to spend christmas in NYC.....maybe next year.
Christmas in Chicago is often lovely, especially on Michigan Avenue, aka The Magnificent Mile: Pretty lights, skating in Millennium Park, the Bavarian holiday village over on State Street, and of course the shopping! Plus, even though it's winter, the more brutal cold generally doesn't come until January, so as long as you dress warmly you should be fine!
One other thing to add to the Chicago Christmas: the window decorations at Macy's, formerly Marshall Field's!
i live in nyc as well .. its amazing at christmas time.
aspen looks like a beautiful place to spend christmas!
I want to visit all those places during the holiday season!
