  • Food War Saturday: Kasugai Gummy vs. Hi-Chew

Here in New York, the NY State Lotto has been airing so many commercials promoting Sweet Millions, the latest way to not win a million dollars. The lyrics go: "If you were a candyman, with eyes made of gumdrops.A heart filled with marzipan, then i tell you so-so, That i wouldn't share, cause no one can have you but me your so sweet, your so sweet..."

It doesn't make me want to play the lotto, but it gives my sweet tooth some serious cravings. In honor of that annoying commercial, this week's Food War will be two delicious Asian candies.

    Kasugai Gummy:

Growing up, I had a lot of Asian friends. I went to the best Middle School in New York City where I met lots of Asian friends who introduced me to lots of Asian candies. Kasugai Fruit Gummy was one of the first ones I came to love.

This Japanese treat is sure to cheer you up. Each gummy is individually wrapped, which keeps them very fresh. Bite into one and it's super soft, with a tangy little burst of flavor. Luckily, they come in lots of flavors such as Lychee, Kiwi, Mango, Apple, Peach, Muscat (White Grape) and Strawberry; a flavor for everyone.

    Hi-Chew

Over the summer, a Xanga coworker and I stumbled upon Hi-Chew. One of us decided to write an article about the experience (Thanks Joe!) and titled the piece "Hi-Chew, What Are You?" Clever and witty, but also a valid statement.

Another product from those crazy Japanese trying to get us addicted to their strange candies! The soft, chewy candy has a strange texture, that makes the experience one to remember. Think of Laffy Taffy and Starburst mating a having a child. These two American candies would have a Japanese daughter called Hi-Chew. (Sleeping around or adoption?) But, they are absolutely delicious.

If you thought Gummies had a lot of flavors, Hi-Chew really wants to target every taste bud in your mouth. Flavors include: Apple, Banana, Cola, Lemon, Mango, Mixed Fruit, Strawberry, Pineapple and many (MANY) more.

This post has left me with the biggest urge to go downtown and buy lots of Gummies and Hi-Chews!

Which is the better Japanese treat: Kasugai Gummies or Hi-Chew?
