  • Travel Pic of the Day

I took this pic at an awkward angle, slantingly gazing upwards, but I feel like that was the vibe rolling through the whole neighborhood. Even though dark, gritty shade and realness swept parts of it, the sunshine that grazed the side of the United Methodist Church-location of the United Saints First Street Recovery Project on the corner of 1st Street and Dryades Street in New Orleans, Louisiana-and its steeple drew the eye and the block's energy towards the sky. Like many other areas ravaged by the hurricanes, this neighborhood is riddled with crime...fired gunshots were often audible.

This hasn't stopped suburban youth from seeking out this exact location for volunteering because public crime records point out that it is literally the only crime-free street corner in the entire section of the city. No matter how downtrodden or compelled to a life of crime some inhabitants of the area may feel, this photo reflects everyone's unwavering respect and warmth felt for the church which gives back to their community in infinite ways and (Unphased by my lack of photo skills) that's a beautiful thing.
