  • Match Up Monday: Brooklyn Bridge vs. Golden Gate Bridge

Tourists don't often visit a city and say "I came here to see a bridge." But, it doesn't mean it isn't worth a look. Some of the most beautiful bridges are a part of our media, in movies and television shows.

The other day, I saw someone write on Facebook how their two favorite bridges are Brooklyn Bridge and the Golden Gate Bridge. Thanks! It makes for a great Match Up Monday!

    Brooklyn Bridge, NYC

    • Being one of the oldest bridges in the United States, the Brooklyn Bridge which connects Manhattan to Brooklyn is an iconic part of the NYC skyline.

    • Part of NYC since 1883.

    • Cost: Free

    • Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1964.

    • Used as a pedestrian walkway. Many New Yorkers spend summer days walking to Brooklyn. It was also used in emergency situations such as the 1967, 1977, and 2003 Blackouts and after the September 11th attacks.
    • In 2003, was part of a terrorist plot by al-Qaida.

    • The bridge was "blown up" in the Will Smith movie: "I am Legend"

    The Golden Gate Bridge

    • Opens the San Francisco Bay into the Pacific Ocean by connecting San Francisco frm the north to Marin County. Opened in 1937 and was once the longest suspension bridge.

    • Cost: $6.00

    • Known for its beautiful orange/red color which glows in different kinds of weather.

    • Became a popular place to commit suicide in the United States. The bridge is 245 feet above the water. Jumpers who fall and hit the water will most likely die instantly as the water feels like you're hitting concrete when you fall very fast. There is no accurate record of suicides since many were not witnessed. Police sometimes find abandoned rental cars from travelers who visit the bridge just to commit suicide. The waters are very strong and often wash the dead out to sea.

    • Was most recognized for being part of the opening credits in the 90's television show Full House.
Which bridge do you like better? Which city would you travel to if you wanted to see the better bridge?
