As you may have heard by now, there are
myths circling the globe about the potential doomsday in 2012. These seven reasons have been "scientifically proven" that the end of days will be in 2012:
1.)
Mayan Calendar - The Mayans lunar calendar will apparently end on December 21, 2012. Basing their predictions that this will evidently be the end of life.
2.)
Sun Storms - Our suns energy has been bouncing up and down plummeting the earth with radiation. Solar experts have predicted that these energy spurts will peak sometime in 2012, causing catastrophic disasters worldwide.
3.)
Atom Smasher - Remember last September when the world's largest particle accelerator was built causing an uproar that when tested it could create a black hole in earth? CERN plans to start it up in 2012 and humans could be sucked into black worm-holes in no time.
4.)
The Bible - Interpretations in the Bible say that Armageddon has been written to occur in 2012.
5.) Well here's the basis of my post-
SUPER-VOLCANO IN YELLOWSTONEWay back in 1995 (I was 8), my family and I traveled from NJ to Wyoming to visit Yellowstone National Park. Some specific details of the trip are blurry, but I do remember many informative and interesting aspects about the park.
One of Yellowstone's famous wonders is the
Old Faithful Geyser. A crater that shoots up to 8,400 gallons of water for about one minute every 90 minutes. I was lucky enough to see it erupt. What a show!!
But Old Faithful is just a small scar in Yellowstone's rocky and unstable volcano floor. As scientists ponder what will end the earth, history shows that the volcano under Yellowstone Park is past due for an eruption. Nearly 100,000 years past. Yellowstone Park is located on top of Yellowstone Caldera (the worlds largest super-volcano). If it erupts, it could blanket half of the United States, and ultimately drastically alter the worlds climate for the next 15,000 years.
6.) & 7.)
Nostradamus, Physicists, Prophecies, Astrology, Book of Revelation... etc.
If you think about the world now, we are fighting two wars, fighting the now global pandemic H1N1 virus, and fighting a worldwide economic recession... could these recent events be a precursor to a doomsday in 2012?
What are your thoughts? Do you believe all the hype?

Not at all!
Is it bad to say I'm not concerned. What are we going to do if it's true anyways? Maybe it's just me.
The only one I'm concerned about is the super volcano. I saw a documentary on that, and it said those living around yellowstone will be lucky and killed instantly. Those of us everywhere else will get to suffer if it erupts and die slower.
The Mayan calendar doesn't say we'll die. They are actually getting pretty annoyed with us thinking it does. They simply say it means something big/important will happen that day. They do not believe it's the end of the world, however.
I started to look into this stuff the end of last year and it really freaked me out. I didn't want to just be scared because I heard some shit, I wanted to educate myself. I looked into the Mayan Calender, I watched Nostradamus, I read Revelations and all of it says that bad things are going to happen. We've already experience some and they're going to get worse but the world isn't going to end.
Didn't a couple Mayan scientists or spokespersons irritably tell Hollywood that it wasn't 2012 or whatnot? They must be pissed. I'd get pissed too, Americans milking other cultures with their lies and pretending that the movies will be all filled with diversity when only the good characters are the white ones etc.
I don't buy that stuff. Just a number on my list of "things too dumb to believe" like psychics and horror movies and religion.
I can say, that everytime I read about it, I send myself into a panic... but I take a deep breath and tell myself everything is going to be okay... cause it's already tomorrow in Aussieland, and no I do not believe it.
Let's think in the big picture here . . . .
Medieval Europe:
There were the crusades, as well as the Hundred Years War (although they were off by 10 or so years). Plus there were many other conflicts going on.
As for diseases, they had it worse. We are only worrying about H1N1, they had the plague. We have modern medical science, they still believed in things like "humors".
Plus there was rampant poverty and low levels of literacy. While we as a society have greater access to knowledge and education, people back in that era couldn't even write their own names.
And no one died. The human race is more resilient than we give ourselves credit.
I thought about it. I wonder what I would do if my life really was going to end in a few years.
I'd travel to see as much of this earth as possible before it's gone, and along with it, me!
But then reality intrudes: I still got to be responsible and pay my bills...
I don't believe any of that. The world will be just fine.
And if it is true, fuck worrying and LIVE.
i literally teared up when i saw 2012 trailer in the movies. right when i'm about to watch some entertaining horror/comedy this crazy trailer popped up. it seriously freaked me out because the potential of something that life changing depressed me and made me super sad.
Don't believe the hype.
It was my understanding that the Mayan calendar just didn't account for anything past 2012--like it was their version of the Y2K/computer scare. Nobody panic. Not about that, anyway.
I thought that the Mayan calendar says that a cycle will end in 2012. I'm not too concerned about that. The sun storms worry me as much as global warming does.
I don't think that the recession will end the world, or be a precursor to the end of the world. The H1N! virus is as bad as regular flu and no worse. There are too many ways that the world could end at any given time.
I am concerned, but I can't see any way to prevent some of those things.
I'm a little worried, but not convinced. For all you believers out there, don't waste your time being scared.. Enjoy your life. 2012 shouldn't hold you down, but it should be motivation for you to live fully.
1. The Mayan calendar has reached many ends. It runs in cycles. This is simply another.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar#2012_and_the_Long_Count
2. Solar activity peaks every 11 years. http://www.universetoday.com/2008/06/21/2012-no-killer-solar-flare/
3. The LHC at CERN turned on last year, broke, and is now fixed. It is running right now. They aren't just turning it on in 2012. And it isn't an "atom smasher"... that's a totally different machine.
"As of 9 November 2009, particles were going half way around the LHC, and the first high energy collisions are expected to most likely occur in early 2010." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Large_Hadron_Collider
Check your facts.
people always find reasons to freak out. remember the year 2000? and 6-6-06? it's like you guys WANT the world to end. even if it was ending (which i highly doubt), i'd rather be blissfully ignorant and ignore what everyone else is saying about 2012. i want to live my life to the fullest, not freak out about the world ending every opportunity i get.
@walkintotheseaaa@xanga - Agreed.
When the end times come, how would we know? The end of the world could be tomorrow, or 5 billion years from now when the Sun becomes a Red supergiant. There's no use worrying about it even if the world were to end in 2012, because it's not like there's anything we can do to stop it, is there?
By the way, there's an 8th reason people believe the world would end in 2012. There was a book written a few years ago about a planet called "Niburu" and people take that fictional book as gospel and actually believe this "invisible" planet would come crashing into earth that day. There are "pictures" posted on the internet of this supposed planet, but these pictures have been later determined to be planetary nebulae occurring lightyears away from us. People making these claims about Niburu are fear-mongering, and laughing at those of us who believe their bullshit. (The closest thing to Niburu is dwarf planet Eris, which can only come within 4 billion miles of earth. If it got any closer, well, that would just defy physics!)
The 9th reason is that December 21st will be 2012's winter solstice, and on this same day, the sun will be between earth and the center of the milky way galaxy. Even though this alignment happens once per every single year, people still believe that some cosmic catastrophe will happen as a result. (Some people also believe that we will be in the exact center of the Milky way that day, and that we'd be sucked into the super massive black hole that is thought to exist in the center of our galaxy. However, the solar system is 8 kpc away [30 million lightyears] from the center of the galaxy, and even the most massive black hole in existence isn't strong enough to pull matter 30 million lightyears away into it in a matter of one day. That also defies the laws of physics, because we'd be moving exponential times the speed of light in order for that to happen! Nothing can move faster than the speed of light!)
And lastly, a 10th reason. Every 400,000 years the iron core in the middle of the earth flips upside down (the tetonic plates stay in place, don't worry people!) When this happens, the earth's magnetic poles switch sides. (So the north pole will switch from positive to negative charge, and the south pole will switch from negative to positive). People also think this'll cause us problems for some reason, however, it's not due to happen anytime soon, but who knows? It still probably won't harm us, though.
Before I go, I'd like to add a little something about the solar flare thing. Every 11 years this same thing happens: the sun's solar flares act up. It's a regular pattern and happened last in 2001. We were fine then. The worst reported solar flare bombarded earth in 1859, and the worst it did was interfere with electrical and radio waves, causing power outages for a few hours, and that's it! Worse case scenario, some places on earth might lose electricity for a couple weeks tops. It's not like the sun's going to blow up!
I really wish people would take a deep breath. We have no control over the world ending, and we *probably* don't know when it will end, either.
"Scientifically proven"?! Hah! You need to learn what "scientifically proven" actually means. These doomsday prophecies are a load of crap.
I received a vision the other night. We dumped some toxic waste on a patch heard of egg plants. They withered and died, but in 2012, they will rise from the dead as unstoppable zombie egg plants and consume the world. That's the way it's going to happen :p.
I think about it, but I don't believe it.
Another end time prophecy...whoop-di-do. How many of these have come to pass now?
The world will NOT end in 2012. This is like year 2000 all over again.
The Mayan calendar- It doesn't predict the end of the world, they just believe in an event that will change the world or be of some importance.
Sun Storms- Do some research about the sun and you'll find that the "sun storms" are a load of bull.
The Atom Smasher- I don't even want to go into why this is stupid.
Bible- Yeah, I don't believe in the Bible, I'm not getting into why.
Super-Volcano- I love how overdue this eruption is yet it just happens to fall on a conspiracy date. Is it going to erupt? Yeah, probably someday, but did you know the government has all this spiffy hi-tech stuff to follow such events? If you live within 500 miles, then you'll probably want to evacuate. If not, I wouldn't worry about it.
Nostradamus- Is a nut job, so there you have it.
These plus the plenty of other ones that aren't listed have been disproved. And sadly, I continue to see more and more new conspiracy theories as time goes on. Remember Y2K? Did that happen? No. And this one won't either.
i don't really get why any rational person would make apocalyptic predictions. if a person's wrong, then everyone receives confirmation that the person's a wacko. if the person's right, he/she gets to say "i told you so." although, when that would actually occur given that everyone would be dead, is beyond me. i suppose rational people don't genuinely make predictions of that sort.
