Not too long ago, I mentioned a great deal I found for a $1 bus ride from
NYC to Toronto. I also mentioned long bus rides and how this one is going to be 10 hours long, Luckily, this bus is so awesome that I was able to write posts and go online from the bus itself. (Wifi is so awesome.)
Being the prepared little bee that I am, a few essentials came very helpful for this 10 hour journey up North.
1. Bring a blanket: You never know what the weather is going to be like in some places. Sometimes, a bus or train station might give too much air. Or, maybe you're like me and you need something to cover you when you need to fall asleep. A scrunched up blanket also makes a good pillow or can plop up your laptop.
2. Pack snacks: Not only will you save money, but you will also save calories. Shops at the rest stop usually have high calorie snacks like croissants and Cheese Doodles. Make a quick stop to the Supermarket before your trip and grab some of your favorite foods to munch on. I'd recommend Ritz crackers, almonds, Chewy Granola bars and Dole fruit cups.
3. Wear comfortable clothing: If you're going to be sitting for a long period of time, you might as well be comfortable. Athletic slacks and a comfy cotton tee is perfect when you're just sitting on a bus. You're not on a bus to impress people, so you might as well be comfy. You can also wear sneakers that come off easily to extend your comfort zone. I might just do that now.
What are some other ways to survive a long bus ride?

I agree with all of the above. I took a 2 1/2 day trip from Seattle, WA to Milwaukee, WI and I did all of the above. I would also recommend a good book, good music, and making conversation. It really helped passed the time, especially since we were all headed different places.

I agree with all of that and not sure I have anything to add other than personal experience.
While in the Dominican Republic, we traveled to other cities (we were mainly in Santo Domingo) by bus. The bus was absolutely FREEZING, but it was hot outside and most of us didn't think about the fact that the bus might be cold - all the cars had been hot. So, basically, it was a very, very long and very, very COLD bus ride there AND back. I ended up using the two towels I'd brought in my bag with me as blankets...haha I'm definitely never forgetting a jacket and a blanket again!

I also suggest that you should, if possible, definitely take some music with you (iPod, MP3, or maybe a laptop&headphones).
Ipod is a must just to make time go by. I wish when I took a 9 hour bus journey down to London I took snacks because they didn't stop anywhere for us to get anything.
Get four hours of sleep the night before can you can nap on the bus.
Don't sleep.
Depends on the bus, but I take a 3 hour bus ride to my hometown from college, and the bus I take is just so awkward that whenever I fall asleep, I end up with a weekend long neckache.
So I try my hardest on long bus rides to stay awake and sitting upright.
Music!
