Do it before you Die Thursday: Eat Escargot in Paris
Enjoying local foods is one of the rules when it comes to traveling. One should always try their best to sample local foods, rather than looking for the nearest McDonalds.Today's Do it before you Die Thursday features one of the most well known dining delicacies known to man: Eating Escargot. They are cooked land snails, usually covered in garlic and oil. They are very high in protein and low in fat, so if you're watching your calories, no worries about snails!
It is a very popular local food in Paris, France. They did it, now would you eat escargot? If you have, did you like it?

I don't think I'd try them.
i've ate them before, it wasnt that bad at least it doesnt taste as bad as it looks. haha. it was super chewy though, it definitely had texture.
I've done that...in Paris. Win.
Yeah I had them Asian style in America and they were salty.
Been there. Done that.
I had escargot on a cruise to Bermuda. The were kind of rubbery in taste, but they smelled amazing.
Maybe...what does it taste like?
I've had it in France. Didn't like them. I think it's cause I'm spoiled from growing up with them Asian style.
Not THAT is something you want to try before you die!
There are so many different ways of preparing it that I'm sure you'll love at least one way. I love them all!!!!
had it when i was in quebec a while back... they're too... buttery? wouldn't have'm again though.
I've had them in an Asian resturant. The snails were made in black bean sauce, though. They were delicious!
Erm you kinda contradicted yourself...>_>;; they're covered in garlic and OIL and they're low in fat? ^^;. Maybe the snails themselves, but not if covered in oil lol.
I might try it, maybe on an adventurous day. I eat a lot of weird things, I love eating pig intestines and ears <3!! *asian*. But...snails and bugs...not so much, maybe because I see them all the time and it's just kinda weird. I know it doesn't make sense, I see cows and chickens too. I guess it's a stupid illogical reason for me not to like it.
@salmandarrr@xanga - Are you sure those were snails? I've never seen snails in a chinese restaurant before. Whelks however are quite popular, and look very similar? Like...sea snails rather than land snails.
i'd try it. haha. Asians eat alot of things... so why not?
I ate them before at a Chinese restaurant.
i had it before when i was little and had no idea what i was eating. it tasted great! then my uncle told me what i was eating and i puked a little.
I love escargot! It's delicious!
I've had it twice while on vacation.
i was waiting for someone to throw up. but hell no, i wouldn't try it. she said it was rubbery... gross. i thought of those pig skins they sell at stater bros.
Well why not? XD It looks a but weird (i guess it's the oil/ butter/ garlic but i see what looks like greenish liquid inside o.o) but i think i would definitely try it. I hear about it from lots of different places (but never how it tastes.) It would work since one of my own personal "do it before you die" goals is to go see the Eiffel Tower in Paris :)
Lol, it's a very typical thing to do while in Paris! However, I don't think I will ever try eating escargot in Paris or anywhere else... I just can't imagine myself eating those slimy critters..
@whoosh90@xanga - Sorry this reply is so late, but yes they were snails. They might've served me Whelks, I really wouldn't know the difference, haha. I can't remember exactly what kind of Asian resturaunt it was, but it wasn't Chinese.
I live in Québec, aka the only French province of Canada, and it is common to eat escargots here. I've had them as hors-d'oevre on Christmas, in fact.
I actually love them, but wouldn't have them daily, just like you guys don't eat caviar daily. ^^
I've actually eaten escargot in Paris before! It was delicious. Absolutely delicious.
I have never tried them, but I would. In fact, why didn't I think of that when I was in Paris 12 years ago. Guess it is something I will add to my Bucket list, lol.
tried it at france n my home town , so YUM!!! =]
You can have escagots in Asian countries too, cooked Asian style. They taste better.
Here they keep those things alive in a fish tank for the customers to choose them themselves. The chef will then cook for them. We use skinny bamboo sticks to poke those fleshy stuff. They taste bland when simply boiled - so you need gravy and other spices.
