In our day and age, we are certainly spoiled. You can't help but get caught up in your many electronics. I am definitely a victim of this crime.
Ever since I got an iPhone, I can't help but use it everywhere. Suddenly, your boring train ride was a breeze when you have lots of mindless applications to play with. Google Maps has saved my life once or twice whether I'm on vacation or just doing daily errands.
Remember the days before iPhones and iPods? Try going a day without listening to music on a bus ride or updating your Facebook status on your phone. Could you do it?Some things I would do to keep the time busy without electronics would be:
- Writing articles or brainstorming for TripCrazed!
- Word Search Puzzles
- Magazines
What would you do without electronics while traveling? How would you entertain yourself?

im living without an ipod/iphone and im fine. i think everyone is just caught up in the apple craze. there are plenty of alternatives. you don't need to be looking at your cellphone screen every 2 seconds, or listening to your ipod whenEVER no ones talking to you. thats a little self-absorbed, don't you think? there are other things going on in the world, you know. this post isn't even about electronics, its about living without an ipod/iphone. what other electronics have you mentioned in this post?!
oh man! the other day, i was late to college, and i left my phone and my mp3 behind, so i had to travel without any entertainment!
it was soooo boring!!
i was tempted to make conversation with the stranger sat next to me on the bus!
then i pretended to read through my notes to make it seem like i was doing something..
i've lived on a boat without any electronics, i survived :) and I had a blast!
@retardtm@xanga - I hate days like that! I start freaking out!!!
i'd die without my blackberry
I'm in college all I ever do is read and write now, but you seem to be on a can you live without ipods I kinda have to say even before that I had a walkman ( if you don't know what that is, it's a big clunky thing you use for something called CDs. and I had a gameboy to keep me busy. I'm also a 90s child so like many we grew up with it as time went on. I didn't get a cell till 8th grade and that was so my mom would not worry about me when I was out. I myself go crazy on long quite rides, though I have done it. I like having an ipod on a trip to the city. I hate when people try to talk to me and I don't know them. Older people seem to think that ipods run or life when, if they had ipods in the 70s you don't think you would play Zepp or The Who all day long to make that long walk home go by fast? I do that now ( drive now, but I was walking then) We live in a day of age when you can have your car die on a highway and call AAA right from your car. I bet that bets walking or getting a ride with a person you don't know. I don't have a iPhone, I got my first iPod ever last summer and I will use it as I wish cuz I am lucky to have it. I can live without this stuff. I just like having music on as I drive or kill that hour I have off. Somedays I don't feel like talking to people. I put my music on and relax in the lounge till my next class. To end this we have had the will and power to walk and play music since the days of the boombox. It's not a new thing and it won't go away.
I have an iPod and I have to remember to use it... I still read and do puzzles on long flights and bus rides! I used to do embroidery, but too often the flights were night flights and the lights would not be bright enough.. and if they were they would annoy the neighbors! Nowadays I don't even want to know what would happen if I brought needles into an airport!
Well, my iPod met its doom this past week when an open water bottle leaked into my purse and missed everything BUT the electronics... *sigh* And I have an hour commute to and then from work every day, so this is a good question.
I get motion sickness easily, so I don't really read while traveling, but I've noticed I have a knack for attracting strangers who love to chat. There have been plenty of times I wanted to listen to my music and zone out when I suddenly find Barb lamenting over my shoulder how her daughter is getting married to the wrong guy and her dog Skippy is ready to kick the bucket. I don't really mind, because I like listening, but it just cracks me up how people just assume I'm a nice person who cares.
I mean, I am a nice person who cares, but THEY don't know that!
@RedZeppelin6@xanga - what are these strange "CDs" of which you speak? I remember having a walkman, but it made music from a small box with tiny wheels trapped in plastic called a "tape cassette"...
I practice dance moves or I stare at people while riding the subway. On the bus however, I try to spot some interesting landmarks / plan future dining locations.
I forgot my phone at home yesterday, and everything felt indifferent.. I love reading while traveling. We also sing during roadtrips. I talk with my family and friends and just enjoy the view.
I almost always bring my knitting with me when I travel. Otherwise, I read... I don't think I've ever used electronics on a trip...for ME. For my kids, sure, because 51 hours in the car does not make for a happy 2 and 3 year old without a little DVD time.
I need my ipod.. >.<
but id do everything on yur list except knitting.
maybe make some new friends lol
Honestly, my iPhone used to be EVERYTHING I did.
Now, I just use it to text, make a few calls, check MLIA, and listen to music while working (I build furniture).
I use Google maps frequently, just so I can see the types of restaurants nearby. I check movie times on my phone, look up random facts, etc.
Could I live without it: Yeah......it would be a hard transition! BUT, I like to read, so I could easily go back to that.
I just need music! I can't live without some form of music playing around me.
Really though, as long as I had a way to listen to music, I could go one without the internet, cell phones, video games, etc.
