What Are Your Roots?
From Guest Blogger Art of Backpacking.
A few years ago, on one of my earliest trips abroad, I was lucky enough to visit Madrid Spain. As a happy-go-lucky 16 year old, the biggest thing on my mind was getting cool souvenirs. Little did I know that one souvenir would stand out and sort of change my life forever.
I was looking at Spanish key chains with surname explanations. A little cooler than your typical name key chain. I saw my last name on it. All of my life, I knew I was Puerto Rican and Taino Indian. I was happy to see my last name there and read the translation.
It said that it was Baroque and part French. Que! Oui! Yes! It was true. After some research, I learned that my family (On my fathers side) is from the region where Spain and France meet.
It is awesome to know where you are from and to trace your heritage!
Where are you from? What is your heritage?

once, I went to China and bought a packet that explained the origin of my surname. I only managed to read enough of it to figure out that somewhere in my lineage there is a princess.
My Viking blood comes from the island of Laeso in Danmark!
My grandmother said either Switzerland or Sweden. I don't remember which one.
I'll get back to you when I find out.
My Mother's side is pure German,
and my Father's side is pure Norwegian
(:
my great grandma was burmese. some greatx7 grandma of mine was russian, and some greatxinsertnumberhere grandpa of mine was an emperor.
Britain and "Hawaiki".
I know I'm part Spanish, and Irish, and French.
But I don't know too much about my heritage, mainly because my dad and my mom's family; with all those ethnicities and origins: it'd be work.
I'm Norwegian, German, and Irish on my dad's side. The last name is definitely Norwegian, and there's something about a viking somewhere in the distance, haha.
I'm Chinese on my mom's side. I know not much about it, since we took on a fake last name (haha) when my grandparents moved my mom's family from China to the US.... oh my. Lots of history there. Family escaping Maoist China and whatnot.
I've got Cambodian, Chinese and French in me. Oh, apparently my mom says I'm a distant cousin of a Cambodian Princess. I called shenanigans on that one. hahahah.
i can trace relatives back to slovakia, germany, france, england, and switzerland.
i'm also irish but i haven't gotten around to tracing that side of my family yet.
and supposedly native american, however, i can't prove it. the guys name was too common and i don't have any actual info about him other than his daughter's name which was also common. its extremely frustrating. My great grandparents came here from Norway. =P
"IS D'ÉIRINN MÉ!!!"
I don't think anyone in my family can trace lineage at all. Sadly, I don't think any of them care. Although I did learn my grandmother's last name is Portuguese. Which is pretty neat to say I have somewhere in the mish-mash of native Mexcians and Spaniards in my Mexican lineage. :D
My dad's side is originally Welsh, mostly German over the years, and a few French in there. My mother's side was orginally English, then mostly Irish over time as far as we know. So, I'm mostly German. It's interesting though that I'm related to Robert E. Lee (my great grandmother's a Lee).
I come from Polish and English nobility. I'm mostly Polish (85%+), and my dad came to the United States from Poland with his family when he was a kid.
Korean. people say Koreans are descendants of Genghis Khan??
I'm Chinese all the way. My mom and dad are both from China & so are my grandparents.
Paternal roots from Israel, Russia, and the Ukraine. Maternal roots from England and Scotland.
To put it simply i'm a huge mutt lol.
French and Cheyenne.
Italian on my dad's side and Korean on my mom's!
this is a funny thing because i just learned that my last name isnt my last name. complicated,. but now, this makes me want to learn more about my family. i think theres mexican, spanish, and indian in our blood. and maybe more.mmm.
My last name is German, from my dad's side. His great grandad is from Frickenhausen, Germany, and supposedly there are still a lot of distant cousins of mine over there with the same last name. Everyone in the States with the same last name is directly related to me though, with the exception of one dude living in New York.
Everything else (English, Irish, French), is from my mom's side. My great X 13 grandfather, George Soule, came over as a manservant on the Mayflower and had the same last name as my mother. Which evidently makes me distantly related to Richard Gere: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Gere.
My mom is obsessed with tracing our family history, back to ancient times, if she could, haha. She loves that stuff, and I'm really glad that her side of the family has preserved so much of the history and research. When I was younger, I didn't care, but now I'm glad that I can pass on the tradition and tell all the stories to my kids.
I'm Japanese, Irish, Scotish, French, Dutch, German and Italian from my dad. My grandpa had papers (which I know have) tracing our lineage back to the Sinclair family of Scotland, which has its own origins from Saint-Clair-sur-Epte of France. I don't know much about this side of my family at all, really.
But I'm Hawaiian and Japanese from my mom. Living in Hawai`i obviously has let me connect with both my Hawaiian and Japanese heritage; I always say I grew up in a Japanese household, since we practiced many Japanese traditions and every day things. My grandparents were both nisei, second generation. And I went to a private school for native Hawaiians, so I definitely learned a lot about the history and culture of Hawaii and its people.
