When you have a lot of money, sky is the limit. You can stay in nice hotels, plan trips to far away places and not have to be frugal about your travel choices.
But what if you decided to do something out of the ordinary. One business man decided to do the uncanny. He traveled the United States and drove through every state in a week.
Okay, he obviously didn't drive to Hawaii and Alaska, but he did see it. How did he do it?
The motivation for his trip was not having enough time for vacation. With only two weeks of vacation time (One used for holidays), he wanted to get the best deal for his vacation. It took years of planning and he ultimately completed his goal.
Here is a snippet of his journey:
"Staying on I-90, I went east in to Indiana (#15), then north for an out-and-back on SR 9 for just a quarter mile to get Michigan (#16). From there I continued on I-90 east to Ohio (#17), where I went through Cleveland at lunchtime, then Pennsylvania (#18), and New York (#19).Upstate New York was the other really beautiful part of my trip. Traveling east on I-90 in early July found the area fairly green and full of life. I grew up in New Jersey and had forgotten how much I missed a lush, green summer. By contrast to California, which has a Mediterranean climate (hot, dry summers, cool, wet winters), the east has fairly steady rain throughout the year. With the sun going down over western New York, and with my feeling like I was making enough progress to pull this off, things were looking up."
The total cost of his trip you're wondering? Less than you'd imagine. The total was thus about $2,750, or about $55 per state. (This was back in 1998. Imagine now with gas prices!

How many states have you visited? Would you do this crazy journey?

This is a great idea. I wouldn't take his route though, it seems kind of like cheating and defeats the purpose of visiting some of those states.
I might do this at some point in time.
I'd take 99 or I-5 up north out of the San Francisco Bay Area though, up through Portland and Seattle, and then east to Spokane and Coeur d'Alene though. He missed a lot there, and the PCH up there is gorgeous, far nicer than the southerly drive he took.
A few when I was in the USA last year, however this was a coach tour holiday and also took some of Canada in.
Last time I went to Kansas, I took one look and turned around too
That's intense. It took me nearly three weeks to go through 42 states.
That's a nice story to tell people, but I would rather have quailty rather than quantity when it comes to travel.
I have been to only 30 states. It's cool that he's been to all 48 on the mainland but the rush means that he misses out on a lot of spots each state has to offer. I'd say quality over quantity.
right now my friend and i are doing 900 miles (5 states) in 48 hours. Not as impressive as 50 states in 1 week, but we only have a weekend.
I would LOVE to do this! It's my life goal to see all 50 states and I often dream of a cross-country road trip myself. Sadly, I am broker than broke right now, and I've only been to 17 states (not counting ones I've only driven or flown through).
I didn't read his entire account of the journey but I feel like that's too many states squeezed into one week.
I prefer a week in each state, heck a month in each state. But I still feel like it wouldn't be enough.
How amazing would it be to spend a year in each state, really exploring what each state has to offer. But then I have plans to see the world, not just the States lol so this wouldn't be realistic.
If by his method, then I've been to...14 states.
@jazziegal97@xanga - I've done 1250 miles in about 36 hours before (8 states). It can be boring but soothing at the same time driving.
