  • Support Local Music!

Some people represent their hometown by the teams that play a certain sport. Some people do it by the history and the artifacts that are there. Some do it simply for the popularity of the place alone.

If there is one thing I first discovered and loved about my state is the music. Those who know me very well knows that I love music, so you can imagine how I start beginning my interest.

We all know that when we talk about local bands, we are talking about the ones who aren't yet famous. The bands that those who watch MTV don't know yet (and probably wouldn't listen to yet) till they get famous. I found Dresden Dolls and The Charms through CDBaby (before one band was famous) and Read Yellow through a Compilation.

Ever since I heard of my 2 first local bands that wasn't famous at the time, I wanted to hear more stuff from home. I searched all over CDBaby, Newbury Comics or the Internet to look for local music.

Now, I subscribe to The Noise, which is a zine dedicated to Boston or Massachusetts-based music.

Every time I hear about a local band, it's like waving a guitar in the air like a flag with a sticker that says "I support local music (and you should too!)". Aberdeen City, Frank Smith, The Faux, The Perceptionists, Bleu, Cyanide Valentine, all of these bands I found from keeping my ear to the ground of Boston.

Though, you can imagine how kind of disappointed I get when some people don't listen closely to music of their city of state. One of my friends listens to BET and MTV, and doesn't like local music. All I had to say is "More for me and the city".

Do any of you listen to music from your city or state? What is your favorite local band?

    I love local bands :)

I saw Oh Sleeper at one of their first shows, when they came to my town and played in an itty bitty venue. Arielle Bryant is also a local artist my friend told me about. Bryant plays in my friend's home town and has quite the rep. for being outstanding. And Sugar Glyder. amazing band.

There's tons of local artists here in Hawai`i, but not many make it to the mainland for exposure. Some that people may know most would be Don Ho or Israel Kamakawiwa`ole. Braddah Iz is one of my all time favorites, along with Keali`i Reichel, Kalapana, Ho`onua, Natural Vibrations, Amy Hanaiali`i, Aunty Genoa Keawe, and Makaha Sons.

I live in TENNESSEE, my state's capitol is Music City, U.S.A., the country music capitol of the WORLD. And where 98% of Christian music comes from. Not mention the Memphis blues. Of course I listen to music from my state!!

My favorite "local" band is Audio Adrenaline, who happens to be my favorite over-all band.
