When in Rome, It's Best Not to Do as The Romans
I love to travel. I literally center my life around traveling. I never want to settle and live in just one place; I want to just travel and experience
what this world has to offer. About 3 years ago, I took a trip to Rome. I spent 4 days and 3 nights there and honestly, I did not want to spend anymore time there. When I got there; I think the only appealing place about Rome, was Vatican City.
I just found Rome itself being so dirty. I understand that Rome is a conserved city and everything there is older than your grandparents; but Graffiti, on the Colosseum was just really upsetting to see.The food on a scale of 1-5 i give it a 3; quiet honestly I don't find Italian food so great. its kind of simple tasting to me. I like more exotic foods infused with spices and flavors.
The people; they were nice. But the shopping [OMG] Amazing. To this day I have everything i bought there. The shirts, jackets and bags. So worth it.
Like every country in Europe; everything is overpriced. I payed 6 euros for a can of coke at this one restaurant. I believe I payed 16 euros for a kids meal at a local Mcdonalds.
The bad thing is you cant negotiate with restaurants, but street goodies, mannnnn.... I pretty much got them for free.Above all; It was an alright trip. Maybe you'd like it more, I wasn't too found or impressed.

Good to know since I had preconceptions about how nice it would be to go there.
@Parsimony@xanga - if u go, prepare yourself and talk alot of money!
I have never been to Rome
Italy is great, I have never been but imagine. There's so much culture there and preservation. Maybe they should clean off vulgar words or words not suppose to be there but it's one of the most beautiful countries.
Haven't been to Rome but always wanted to go. My friends went and all had good stories to tell.
I don't mind graffiti simply b/c it's part of a city. Any big city will have graffiti and homeless people, there's nothing to fuss about. For me, shopping is never on my top things to do, it's probably the last LOL.
I think what happened was that all the hype set your expectation too high. Just like my expectation of Paris to be absolutely amazing and it didn't live up to its promise. It was wonderful though.
I've been to Rome, and I agree with most of your criticisms. I liked how there was always water running on the streets..
I think it's nice to know that nowhere is perfect.
I adored Rome! I studied in Florence in 2008 and went to Rome every chance I could. Now, Florence....it has it's good parts but overall I wouldn't stay there for more than a couple days.
Right. Did you try all the gelato? How much research did you do before you went?
Rome houses a lot of cultural, historical, and artistic events as well as culinary delights. You only get so much out of it, if you've done your research before you go. Here's the link to my Rome entry:

Maybe I'm beginning to lecture but traveling is not just buying a ticket, going someplace, only seeing the beautiful sights, then leaving with pictures and memories. It's trying to understand another culture, why and how they got to be what they're like today. Rome to me is a scarred and beautiful warrior, an older Athena that is struggling to polish her shield.
Shopping? You can easily do that online, without traveling.
a happy meal only costs €4... Coke is around €1.....
i think you're a little overzealous with your punctuation.
