Plastic Roads in India
The Public Works Department of Himachal Pradesh in northern India has started constructing roads with plastic and polythene waste.
It’s an attempt to save the environment from the menace of plastic waste. The plastic will actually make roads stronger. This effort by the state government has been well appreciated by environmentalists in the area. The plastic appears to have strengthened roads by enhancing asphalt's bonding ability, and made the roads longer lasting. While normal road surface lasts 3-4 years, a plastic-bitumen road lasts at least 7-8 years.
Costs of the road are just about 4-5 percent more than a normal bitumen (Asphalt or asphalt cement) road.
What are your thoughts on this? Why aren't more places doing this with Plastic waste?
