It's difficult to imagine the tragedy of the September 11 attacks to have been 8 years ago already. To me, it feels like everything happened yesterday.
As a New Yorker, images of that tragic day still linger in my memory and I can't even imagine how family members of those lost must feel.
How are we to commemorate this uniquely tragic day in American History? Its not a holiday that we should get off to enjoy not being at work. Nor a day to have a 3 day weekend, at least this year.
Instead, this year will be the first 9-11 National Day of Service.
The mission is to honor the victims of 9/11 by pledging to volunteer at least one good deed or service every year on this date. It creates a legacy to rekindle the spirit of human nature of Americans that came together after the 9/11 attacks.
I remember my mother picking me up from school and wanting to go down to Ground Zero and help out because she is an LPN nurse. In the days after the tragedy, many establishments let people put up their missing person's signs to find lost loved ones. Everyone came together as a nation to help one another.

It shocks me that no one has commented yet..
This is such a great idea. I'll totally do it.
Good idea, I could use the help. I'm a volunteer for the Veterans History Project and the veterans of WWII are dying off faster than I can get their interviews filmed. I haven't even started on Korean or Viet Nam conflict vets yet. Doesn't this seem like a suitable endeavor to comemorate the tragedy?
