  • Don't Steal The Sand!

Now that summer is practically over and it lingers through the month of September, don't you wish you could take the sand and shore with you?  When I was a kid, I would always take seashells and a handful of sand home. (In addition to the sand stuck in my bathing suit!) In Cancun, with the miles of shoreline, one beach was shut down due to stolen sand!

After Hurricane Wilma in 2005, a lot of the Cancun shoreline was destroyed. The Mexican government spent millions to bring the beach back to life. Much of it still washes away, but many hotel property owners build breakwaters to keep the sand and tourists happy on vacation. In other words, they are hold on to their nitty, gritty sand.

Now the government is cracking down on these resorts and closing down beach properties to handle this problem, making many tourists trying to enjoy their beach vacation, very upset.

When I was in Hawaii, there were huge signs saying not to steal the black sand.

Will stealing sand grow to be a big deal? Have you ever stolen sand from the beach?

I can definitely see why they want to be protective. My favorite sand is coral sand, which you'll find in a lot of the Caribbean islands. The creation of the sand is a long natural process, in which parrotfish and other animals eat algae off coral, ingesting tiny bits of coral at the same time. They poop it out, the coral comes out undigested, and comes to the shore. If everyone took some home every time they went to the beach, erosion would occur that much faster. And it wouldn't be replenished as quick either since coral and the ecosystems it supports are dying off. And natural erosion occurs quicker when there's a lot of dead coral too, because then it doesn't act as well in its capacity as a natural buffer against large waves.

When I went to visit Cancun 2 years ago I was unable to enjoy the hotel's private beach, being that it no longer exists! All the sand is gone.

I always took a bit of it, but I guess if everyone did...

@black_lie@xanga - Well said. I can understand that. Although, I still have sea shells I took from a family vacation back in 1991.

I think it will.... I live on a small island, Guam... I don't think I'll like the fact that sand is being stolen. What're the people going to do with that sand anyway? Make a little beach at their house?? Maybe for scrap books right? Pictures are good enough.

I'm from Hawai`i and I've only been to a black sand beach once. But I saw a family scooping up some sand right in front of me, so I went up to them and asked them if they could put it back. They stared at me like I was weird, for talking to them about stealing the sand.

Here in Hawai`i, anything that comes from the land or the sea is very important and special, and it isn't ours (people, humans) to take for ourselves. It BELONGS to the land or the sea. It's like when tourists or whoever takes lava rocks; there's a reason that bad luck follows them after that. It just isn't respectful.
