A friend told me something was missing in my life, suggesting that I should have a religion. I want to find my true self spiritually but not through religion. So hopefully I would like to travel.
I can view the world differently and maybe find myself for sure right? Europe, Asia, across the U.S.--
anywhere and everywhere beautiful and worth going to.
But to get anywhere is not that easy is it? So travelers
who had life experiences, how did you start out? Where did you go? When you came back home did you find yourself to have changed in any way?

I haven't traveled too far. Just across the United States. I think I'm changed in a million and one ways.
You should read the book, "Eat, Pray, Love," by Elizabeth Gilbert.
Whenever I feel down I usually go to the riverfront and sit there just thinking about stuff. I usually come back calmer and more understanding of whatever situation I was in/am in.
The really great thing about travelling is that every destination carries its own tune, its own innate experiences, and its own vibe. I think you'll find what you're looking for, but make sure you visit places that you perceive will mean something to you.
I don't believe you need a religion in order to find yourself, or what the meaning of your life is. It's a lifelong process, for sure - but the things you learn about yourself along the way can be quite rewarding and give you much insight into the world around you.
I started travelling much more because of my current job, and I learned that travelling solo, without friends, is actually more rewarding than travelling with friends; because even though my account managers were staying in the same hotel, they left me alone so I had a chance to be alone and do what I wanted to do. Or, if you have friends you can travel with who are on a similar journey, all the better!
A possible starting point: What kind of music are you into? You can consider travelling to those places. Blues? New Orleans and Chicago. Hip hop? New York and Chicago. Beats? Miami. Indie Rock? Los Angeles, and etc. Tapping into what makes those music artists tick is a great start!
Also, if you're in CA, I suggest you cruise up and down PCH. It took me 13 hours with stops from Orange County to San Francisco, but there's more road to trek, both north and south.
Good luck!!
Oh, and did I find myself changed - yes. I made it a point to come back a better, more refined woman - and I've gotten my wish everytime, no matter how short my trip was.
I love adventure travel very much, you could learn a lot of things. The more you travel the more you want to travel and experience more unique things. You can also learn new things based on experience. I started by aiming to go to this place, save money then go enjoy life.

St. Augustine once said, "The world is a book, and those who don't travel read only one page." Travelling can really broaden your perspective and even change your life. In a way, travelling could be considered as a religion.
