  • Do you talk to people you travel on planes with?

I recently flew from New York City to Honolulu, HI and had to take 2 flights to get there and 2 back. I met some really cool people and struck up very interesting conversations. The people I meet while traveling by plane have come from all ages and all walks of life. In fact, my husband and I (in our late 20s) became very good friends with an older couple (retired) and we still communicate through email.

This is the part of long flights that I think makes up for sitting in a small seat for so long. There are people that I don't think I'd run into in my busy day, but because I'm sitting in a plane for hours, it opens up the opportunity for discussions with these very different people.

Do you meet interesting people while traveling by plane? Do you talk to your seat neighbors?

    I wish I could
but sadly the only time i talk to strangers is when I have something in common with them.

Sometimes I do. I would like it if a conversation turned into keeeping in touch afterwards. Although, other times I am so exhausted and too tired to talk, andI  would just like it if it the person next to me did not to talk to me.

No, because I fear that I might have a Fight Club moment, in which he/she is actually a figment of my imagination.

Haha well, maybe not, but I still hardly ever talk to the other passengers.

I'm not sure why, but I think sometimes people on planes mistake me for an interesting person, because even if I'm watching a movie, reading a book, or sitting with my eyes closed, they still talk to me...and it's never a hot, single guy either...

btw, that is a ridiculously tiny cabin in that photo.

We have so much in common! On my trip last week to Kona, Hawaii, I was on 2 planes each time too. (Stop over in LA) and on 1 of those flights I talked to the person next to me.

The first lady was so nice. She shared her snacks with me and gave me her metrocards with some cash left since she had no use for them.

On all the other flights, it was either a kid that was asleep or me who knocked out! It was nice to talk with the first lady. We had a lot to talk about and it was nice to talk to someone who has no preconception of you. Its almost such a raw conversation, because it will be so short.

How was your trip BTW? We should share Hawaii dish.

People talk to me on flights but I really rather just sleep or read.  Talking takes a lot of effort, then it's awkward when you run out of stuff to say and just sit there silently next to each other.  That's just me...

  • ivy_wong0309@xanga

no . i never talk to them

  • KorineForever@xanga

My mother likes to talk to people on planes.I use too but I don't get the chance anymore my husband and boy take up the two other seats

  • LaLunaHollow@xanga

no, I don't talk to them, but they often talk to me... it's very annoying, I once had a man start telling me off that video games are a waste off time ( I was reading a game magazine) I told him if I had time to read a book I had time to play...

once a man started talking about his airline food... -_-

and once a man started talking about his cat.. but that was on a buss hmm

really I just wanna be left alone but apparently I look friendly or something..

I've always travelled with family, so normally I would sit by them. Although one time, I had boarded a plane to go to another city to pick up my car. Before the plane had actually gone airbourne, the man I sat beside had small introductions and talked about the business of our trips. While in the air, we never really said a word.. he was just typing away on his laptop so I didn't want to disturb him. Before we had went our separate ways, we said our goodbyes and wished eachother safe travels.

only once and i got lucky because he was majorly hot, but sadly he was going home to his girlfriend :(

  • erelyn@xanga

Yeah I have for some reason I was going from DTW to Honolulu as my destination as well. It was a retired couple as well. So friendly. And I always wish that it would be a cute guy I get to sit next by, but never ends up that way. But I still prefer having no one sit next to me at all. I'm so tiny that I can actually curl in a ball within two seats and sleep that way. lol

I try to go to sleep! But yes I've met some very interesting and cool people while traveling. Because in 2008 I still voted in VA, despite living in NY, I wasn't sure my ballot was received (VA is a little slow). So I went down and on the way back I met people young and old(er) who were so excited to have turned the state from Republican to Democrat. One older white lady mentioned her role during the Civil Rights Movement and how much this moment meant for her (and the people she fought with that didn't live to see it). It was a great way to leave. :)

And while on a trip to DC via Amtrak, I was working and on my laptop, which intrigued the older lady next to me. Within probably 30 minutes she was proofing my website. Lol.

@LaLunaHollow@xanga - Ahaha - yea. It's bad enough I'm uncomfortable on the plane in Coach (which has increased now that I've gotten a taste of 1st Class seating). But now someone wants to TALK and I have to pay attention and strain my neck to appear that Im doing so!?

"And whose fucking baby is that!?"

    Flashback, sorry.

  • Swhatley@xanga

I don't generally talk to my seat neighbors. Occasionally I will, if they strike up a conversation. I won't be rude or anything, but I don't generally offer myself to conversation with strangers.

  • LaLunaHollow@xanga

@Complexitii@xanga - lol yes! As if I want to know their opinion on the world economy or what they think of my hobbies.

Oh and the babys, don't get me started on the babys!

Most interesting people I meet when traveling is in the citys or villages that I visit, not on the plane.

  • Complexitii@xanga

@LaLunaHollow@xanga - LOL! Sometimes, when I'm stuck on a fricking tarmac for 1000 hours and a kid starts crying or whining, I start doing it too. "Wahhhhh... I feel your pain kid GET ME OUT OF HERRRRREEEE" - a little embaressing for my friends. LOL.

And I agree, the most interesting people are usually in the place I'm actually visiting.

  • LaLunaHollow@xanga

@Complexitii@xanga - Oooh I do that too! but in stores, like a kid is whining for candy so I do it to while looking at it. that usually shuts the kid up and irritates the parents lol

  • gasdoc73@xanga

Yes I do talk with strangers on airplanes and I met some very nice people! We had interesting conversations, going from the facts of life, passing through politics and finishing on local food!

    • About Me: Age: 27, Location: New York, NY Favorite places I've visited: Trick question! I've been to so many amazing places, but if I absolutely had to pick, I'd settle on a couple places to shorten the list. Madrid, Spain because that's where I did my study abroad program when I was 18 and it was there that the travel bug bit me so hard it left a scar. I haven't been the same since. And Vietnam. That's where my family is from. Although, I'm Vietnamese American, I never actually visited Vietnam until I was 26. It was an awesome experience to learn about my family's history and I was quite pleased to show off my vietnamese language skills to the locals. It's quite a big deal for an american-born.
