  • Muy Bonita: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

    source

Two years ago, my family and I stayed in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. When my parents asked me where I want to go for my graduation present it was the first place that popped into my mind. Has anyone else ever been there, and if so what were your thoughts? If not, if you could go anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

Omg... I wanna go there now.
If I could go anywhere in the world I'd want to go to Monaco, France :)

I JUST arrived from there last night! It was almost heart-breaking to leave. Though we exclusively stayed at Punta Cana, we did take tours to the capital of Santo Domingo and an "eco-tour" to El Macao beach on two separate days of our vacation. Being at Santo Domingo was a humbling experience because you sort of get a feel for the hard life of the citizens there and you see even young children selling things or begging for money. It's pretty difficult to decline, but you have to. The "eco-tour" was fun though! We got to see the country side and it's truly a beautiful experience being with some of the people. Do be careful of yourself though because they like to bargain, and if you want to make it a comfortable trip, stay at an all-inclusive. I recommend Moon Palace Bavarro or Majestic Elegance through CheapCarribean.com if you can find a good deal right now.

I absolutely LOVE the Dominican Republic! I got back, about a month ago, from a 6 week internship/study abroad trip to this fabulous country.

Near the end of our trip, we went to one of the All-Inclusive Resorts in the Bavaro/Punta Cana Region (Barcelo - Premium). We had a great time. The beaches and water were beautiful. However, I preferred the more local-type places. We went to Samana and had the beach we visited to ourselves. It was amazing! However, the ride there was treacherous, I could see why no one was there!

We lived and worked in Santo Domingo otherwise though. As @wired_cynic@xanga said, the people do like to bargain. However, I had a great time doing this! I speak quite a bit of Spanish, and I got really good at the bargaining thing, it was fun.
Santo Domingo is a wonderful city with a great deal of history as it is where Columbus first landed (first city in the Americas). Great things to see and do!

The landscape is beautiful everywhere - great beaches, great mountains. Stunning. The people are great as well. The majority of them are very kind and helpful and love the tourists.

I definitely recommend going to the Dominican Republic to anyone reading this. I would suggest knowing a little Spanish though if you plan on traveling outside of a resort or Santo Domingo (many in the city speak some English, but I'd still recommend Spanish).

To answer the other part of your question, if I could go ANYWHERE, I'd go back to the DR, but I'd also go to Argentina, Chile, Spain, Europe, Australia, New Zealand...Okay, I can't pick one place! I want to see the world! :)

I'm glad you had fun in Punta Cana, gorgeous place and great choice!

It's a beautiful place but be aware of the locals... They have a tendency to try to get you to buy their wares while you're on the beach. Find a hotel that has a private beach, so avoid the pushy sellers.
