  • Roodharigendag: 5,000 Redheads Unite

Only one to two percent of the world has natural red hair.  Because redheads are so rare, it isn’t often that you will spot more than a handful of them in the same vicinity at once.  That is, unless you happen to find yourself in the historic city of Breda in the Netherlands on September 5 or 6 this year, one weekend where you may see up to 5,000 redheads together at once.

Each fall since 2005, Redhead Day, or Roodharigendag, has brought together thousands of redheads from more than 20 countries.  The festival lasts two days and focuses on people with red hair as well as artwork related to the color red.

The event is free, and while it attracts mostly redheads, it is open to people with all hair colors, including “non-redhaired partners, children and admirers.”  Activities during the event include workshops and lectures related to red hair, as well as many photo shoots.

A redhead myself, I would love to be able to travel to the Netherlands and experience being around so many people who share my hair color.  The photos from previous Redhead Days are amazing to look at; I can’t imagine being someone to actually blend into a crowd for once instead of sticking out in it.

Do you have red hair or admire red hair? What do you think about Redhead Day?

Not to boast, lol, but I love my strawberry-blonde/red hair, :) I love it especially in the summer when the sun glitzes it with honestly bright gold streaks. I always say why get highlights when I just have to spend a day in the sunlight. Only bad thing with that is my face also will look like a tomato, rofl! Hmmm. Perhaps I can make me a hat with a hole in the top yet still the beakbill-thingy to cover my forehead and face, lol.

I think that redhead event day would be a lot of fun! I honestly NEVER thought about it, but you are right, would be cool being around so many other redheaded people! First thing I usually notice when I am in a crowd is that I'm usually the only redhead. Hmmm...makes me wonder if us redheads can yell "DISCRIMINATION" as we are a minority or get special attention for it besides that single event. Maybe Obama could initiate some special programs for us, rofl! I mean honestly (as I said your post caused me to think about this minority thing), there are programs especially for minorities with regards to race/SKIN COLOR, so why not for HAIR COLOR? In fact I wouldn't rule out that a redhead has been discriminated against at some time or another because of their red hair, especially if it was a man married to a hot-tempered red-headed woman, ROFL!

This also got me to thinking. We have an RV we just bought that is a 1989. We got a great deal on it so we took it. Well, our campground down the road is for the elite, the rich, lol. I called about just parking there to try camping life out and they told us RVs that parked in their campground could be no older than 10 years old. Imagine that...RV discrimination, lol. I told them EVEN if I could afford one of the 800,000.00 ones, I would never park it there just because of the fact that they discriminate, rofl!

Anyways, enjoyed your post...Didn't mean to get off on the discrimation of red hair issue. Just there may be something there on REALLY thinking about it and the Redheaded event day, :)

    Lol, I don't... but that's pretty cool.

    haha, interesting.

I probably don't count though. My hair is Auburn. Those pictured are Strawberry Blonde type Red-Heads. I didn't look at the other pictures, there's probably some fiery red heds too. *wonders about Auburn, thinks it's probably considered more brown than red, unless in the sun* hahaha

Well, just wanted to say, that's interesting.

@JUSTAVAPORHERE@xanga - Thanks!  Yeah, wouldn't that be funny if we were officially declared a minority lol... why not?

Thats pretty cool. I'm just an admirer though. Usually if I can't figure out why I think a guy is cute after a few minutes I'll realize the guy has red hair. lol Love it.

That is so cool! I've always kind of stood out because of my strawberry blonde hair. Constantly when I am at salons, people will say to me, "Do you know how much women will pay to get their hair that color?" I usually just shrug and get embarrassed. I also get the question about highlights alot. No, they're just natural thanks to the sun and alot of chlorine when I go swimming.

It is pretty cool being a redhead. I always wanted darker hair for the longest time, but now I really can appreciate my hair for what it is: unique. I'm very Irish in my heritage too, so I guess that has partly something to do with my coloring. Being a redhead is not something I think about alot, but now that I stop and think about it...it really is a big part of who I am. Just like the part of me that hates onions, the part of me that insists on rereading my favorite books---it's just something I've gotten so used to, I just don't acknowledge it anymore. But my boyfriend mentioned this the other day--how rare natural redheads are, which makes me sad! I think it was said that they'll be completely gone in so many years or something. That's depressing, in a way. :(

So, I think this redhead festival sounds awesome!!! Redheads are zany and crazy, so it'd be cool to see that many in one place!

i really wish i had red hair. the color is really hard to hold in pre-dyed hair.

this is funny, though. i wish i could attend. it sounds like the lectures are for coping with your abnormalities :P

i have a friend with red hair and he hates it. i don't understand!

  • Papilio_machaon@xanga

A friend of mine goed to this event every year, she told me about the existence of it last year. She has beautiful red hair. I think it's kind of funny!

  • Morningstarrising@xanga

@ashleyannaka@xanga - I was thinking the same thing, as this is my natural hair color as well.

    What an interesting concept, though!
