  • The Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum: A Great Place to Visit!

    source

This weekend I went to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum, located on Pier 86, 12th Ave and 46th Street in New York City. It was AWESOME! The museum is an actual aircraft carrier, the USS Intrepid, that was decommissioned in 1974 and has been transformed into a hands-on, interactive and educational museum, featuring exhibits on the actual aircraft carrier and the missions it undertook and what life was like on the ship.

Other exhibits include the Intrepid's role in the space race, including picking up the Mercury space capsule. The museum is split into levels according to the decks of the ship. The top deck is the flight deck, and exhibits over 18 airplanes and helicopters. Visitors can climb up to the top of the ship to the navigation bridge and captain's chair. Other great features include many interactive, historical videos explaining the Intrepid's history, a ride on an aircraft elevator, exploring an actual submarine the USS Growler, and a tour through the British Airways Concorde.

I took my six year old nephew and he had a great time. I would say that kids as young as four will enjoy themselves, both boys and girls. The musuem is very accessible and easy to explore, except for the submarine and the navigation bridge which use stairs and narrow passageways to access. It is also affordable. New York residents should check the local grocery store (visitors too!)-cans of Pepsi offer free admission with the can! The Intrepid is a really fun museum and so visually stimulating. Allow yourself at least three to four hours to get the most of your visit. For more information, check out the museum website.

The Museum features a range of interactive exhibits and events
providing a snapshot of heroism, education, and excitement.  Children
and adults alike find themselves immersed in and inspired by the
Museum’s exhibits, which range from thrilling historical re-creations
such as Kamikaze: Day of Darkness, Day of Light, to new interactive
displays. Visitors also can ride in the A-6 Cockpit Simulator, visit
the Virtual Flight Zone, and tour the inside of the world’s fastest
commercial airplane, Concorde.  More than 50,000 school children
participate in the Museum’s unique educational programs every year.
These programs cover every age group and include special initiatives
such as character and leadership development.  The Museum also hosts
the annual Fleet Week celebration in honor of our military personnel.
    You dont need any no
    fax
    payday
    loan
just to enter the museum. Besides, it will be worth it
to enter this kind of place.

I went there recently to watch an ill-fated outdoor screening of Jaws (it started to pour about an hour into the film and everything was cancelled). However the ship and its history seemed pretty interesting. I may be back and explore like you did.
