  • San Diego Bound; Suggestions Needed!

    source

I am headed to San Diego at the end of the month to visit a friend in the Marines who is stationed out there. I will be there for five days. Any suggestions on how to make the most of my short vacation on a budget?

What are some "must see" attractions and locations? I am big into nature, the outdoors and wildlife. I plan on going camping in the desert at least one night and going to the beach. Any great beaches? Is the San Diego Zoo worth a visit? Thanks all!

I absolutely loved the San Diego Zoo. Coronado is a nice place to walk on the beach. Old Town San Diego is good place for Mexican food.

I agree with the Old Town statement.  There are wonderful restaurants there and it's such a pleasant section of the city.  I would also recommend that you take a short drive to La Jolla.  The beaches are amazing and there also is good shopping in the "downtown" area.  When I went I had a great time at Balboa Park.  The zoo is in the park, along with museums.  I believe we even saw a Shakespeare play there.  Enjoy!

Go to the Wild Animal Park also, if you love animals.  The Zoo is worth it alone for the Pandas.

Also, I would go to Mission San Diego de Acala, to see part of the history of California.  http://www.missionsandiego.com/index.htm

Check when you are there, and go to a San Diego Padres game, as Petco is a nice stadium.

San Diego Zoo and Sea World would probably both interest you then.  There are so many great beaches to visit over there; really any would be a fine choice.

La Jolla was beautiful. I also stayed in Encinitas which I believe is right outside San Diego. They had cute little places to shop and eat.

La Jolla's Blacks beach is beautiful, and if you want to try a nude beach, that is a clothing optional one.

Since you said you like outdoors, snorkeling in la jolla cove would be fun.
And hiking at Torrey Pines State Park has a beautiful view of the ocean and park.

Go to La Jolla, eat at Harry's or the Cottage and then hike in the Torrey Pines State Park

You got some really good suggestions there.   The Wildlife Animal Park, the SD Zoo, and Seaworld are all world-famous.

Since you're into nature and will be there for 5 days, I would like to suggest you check out the city/town called Julian.  It's like a 1-1/2 hr drive from SD.  http://www.julianca.com/

Gas Lamp district Downtown for food/music/night life
Wildlife Animal Park Zoo where herbivores practically eat out of your hand (Giraffe, Rhino)
Snorkel La Jolla Cove (might need thin wet suit as water temp is in the upper 60's

    Have a great trip!

San Diego Zoo is it similar to African Safari wild life.

San Diego Zoo is worth it! Go to Mission Beach if you want to hang out with a bunch of people, Coronado beach if you like a lot of white sand, and a bit of a smaller crowd. Coronado island is kind of quaint to for breakfast or lunch. Windansea beach if you love to surf!!  For outdoorsy stuff, go to Torrey Pines State Natural reserve.
