A couple of friends and I are thinking of taking a day trip to Fire Island sometime this weekend. For those of you who don't know about Fire Island, it is a small community located south of Long Island, New York. 30 miles long and only half a mile wide, the island actually bans all cars from passing through. In fact, the only transportation allowed is reserved for emergency vehicles.
A quiet setting like Fire Island sounds the perfect escape for my friends and me this weekend, but aside from its peacefulness, I don’t really know much else about the place.
Have you ever been to Fire Island? What have you done there and what parts of the island would you suggest going to? What restaurants, shops or beaches should I check out?
All tips are appreciated!

wow, i've never heard of this place, and i'm from new york! that's really cool!
WAH! this seems really cool! why did they call it the fire island tho?
I was just there this past weekend and had the greatest time with my friends!! we chilled on the beach for hours, got nice and tan, checked out some shops, had some good food, etc. the ferry ride over was a lot of fun! the water was gorgeous and the wind was refreshing. lots of people go there to make connections, like theyre all successful people who go to meet more successful people, or so I hear. I also hear that theres a big gay scene.
@swordman2000@xanga - There are a few different theories. Check this out: http://www.nps.gov/fiis/historyculture/fireislandorigin.htm
