Rome Restaurant Charges Tourist $1000 for Meal

A restaurant in Rome that charged a Japanese couple almost $1000 for a meal has been closed.
According to a Yahoo! story, "the young couple, who have not been named, were outraged by the 695 euro bill on June 19 which included two plates of pasta, a bottle of water, a bottle of wine and a fruit salad. The service charge alone was 115 euros."

I can somewhat relate to this story. When I was in Rome, I ate a meal at a small restaurant that had no menu. The owner would take whatever fresh ingredients he had and suggest some dishes to you. The place was recommended and the food was good, but I'm pretty sure the owner ended up charging tourists whatever he wanted.
Have you ever had an experience when traveling that you felt you were overcharged because you were a tourist?

At the airport coming back from vacation we got in a cab to take us home & he wanted to double the fare thinking he were desperate enough to pay. My mom jumped out & talked to the guy directing people to cabs & he got ripped a new ass & we got the correct fare (& he got no tip).
What this restaurant did was disgusting, I hate when people try to take advantage of visitors. It sours their experience & then people will assume that country is horrible. There was a restaurant in the south that would charge black people before they even got their food & would treat them horribly & they got shutdown too & rightfully so.
I think once or twice we may have be overcharged whilst eating out abroad.
@Shinbi_Belldandy@xanga - wow that's horrible!
stuff like this is why i'm hesitant to travel. i'm afraid i'll be taken advantage of.
@B1ANCACACA@xanga - That's why I tell people to do research before going on vacation. Make sure you know about the crime rates, where it's safe to go (even tho nothing is 100%) & dont carry too much cash. You can call your card providers & banks to let them know you'll be out the country so they can authorize your card for use & then get travelers checks. Those are replaceable & safer than cash. And get a currency rate card so you know the prices before hand. I never eat anywhere that doesnt have a menu or prices displayed, even in the States. That's how they take advantage.
As for the cabbie, he was just a jerk desperate for money, like he had to work that hard. Airports almost always have a set fare because of gas milage. Usually $30-50 + tip depending on how far you are. He tried to charge us $60 for a $30 ride!!
Have you ever had an experience when traveling that you felt you were overcharged because you were a tourist? (this question alone)
It happens often, not just in Rome.
@elittlebear@xanga - yea i've heard of this happening in China before
My friend's dad had this happen to him in Florence. One problem he was a food reviewer and needless to say wrote a really awful review of the place. Vengeance is sweet.
This is the way how you should do it.You can retire early, like that restaurant.I've been on many places and this is not happened to me.I have leaned to look for restaurants, which is always full of people and is recommended in the guides. Not that it's 100% guaranteed, but the chance on an happy ending is much bigger.
Autisable
Life in italy is even much worse than this. By the way Also italians get ripped off, even from public services, throughout approx. everything as you step out of your house. Since about 20 years or so, human rights have gone way well below zero.
read beppegrillo.it and you'll find out much worse stuff.
I don't get paid for this. Hope I am not spamming.
