I know this is a sticky subject and there are dozens of horror stories from those against public health care, Michael Moore stories and opposing ones too, but here is one story for public health care.
My client was visiting me in Japan this week and slipped while jogging and
dislocated his finger...painful for sure...I took him to the ER in Tokyo...although he was a foreign visitor of course they treated him immediately.
We gave his name and a local contact number and away he went, no paperwork... two sets of X-Rays, before and after treatment, injection, splint and bandages. His prescription for pain medication was filled on the spot. The grand total US$250.
Had he been a citizen he simply would present his health card and all would be handled swiftly and for free. I know not every procedure is this simple and there will be those who say they want a choice of doctors, etc., but usually in the ER you have no choice anyway.
A visit to ER is traumatic enough but it would be great if those visits did not have the added stress of the bill...what do you think?

I think the US needs to stop ravaging its sick citizens for ridiculous profits and catch back up to the world.

I'm studying abroad in Denmark right now and my Health class went to the hospital to talk to an administrator. Everything is totally free, other than vision and dental. All surgeries are free, and even fertility treatment! It blew me away. Of course, they pay a great deal more in taxes (50%), but there are American families that spend more than 50% of their income on healthcare.

Is a cruise really better than flying?
I have come to the conclusion that going on one of those great luxury
cruise ships is actually worth all the money as well as being a lot
better than taking a plane there. Why is it that it is better than
flying?

I thought this post would be on one of those medical tourism package things. It's pretty big in Asia, as in Americans&Europeans come to Asia to get next to dirt cheap world-class medical treatment and get a good package with a 4-5 star hotel that sometimes includes spa treatments too. And of course, some go to Thailand with a similar package for gender reconstruction surgery. It would make an interesting post for you guys..
And answering your question, yes. I definitely agree. I study in the US and I'm required to pay for crazy expensive student health insurance. I would never have to pay so much for that, and its like US$1000 per semester. Eep! In Malaysia, everything is so much cheaper here because the government subsidizes it. The amount people pay for insurance/medical charges in the US astounds me so much I just get antibiotics from home and bring it over there.
