Today, as I was sitting at the bus stop, the combination of the hot weather and the rushing by of cars suddenly made me think of Hong Kong. I remembered vividly the sights and sounds of standing at a busy intersection. In my ears thundered the frenzied clacking of the crosswalk lights telling blind people, "Hurry up! Now's your chance! Cross the street!"
Then, the stoplight would turn yellow, and the crosswalk light would get more lethargic, clacking only a couple times every second, causing people to race across the street. As the light turned green, the crosswalk would turn red, clicking sternly at a slow pace, admonishing the walkers who wished to cross. For an insanely brief moment, everything would be still as pedestrians and cars alike stayed paused. Then the rush of the cars would start up again, bright red taxis weaving in and out of traffic as double decker buses farted placidly by. All around me, old people rocked back and forth on their feet, guardians held on to children's hands, and businesspeople in suits stared at the lights, all of them waiting for the crosswalk light to start its stream of constant clacking again.
I saw and heard all this in my mind in the space of five seconds. I blinked and looked up, and once again I was alone on the side of an impersonal highway in the north side of Pittsburgh.

Aw. I was probably on that same highway sometime this week. I volunteer at my mother's work on the north side a lot.
I am a HongKong people and I live in HongKong ....
hk ftw. =)
aw, now I'm reminded of my time in HK too. Can't wait to visit that place again.
And now you've made me anxious for Friday, when I'll be in Pittsburgh. <3
Thank you for this beautiful picture! It's exactly as I as well remember Hong Kong at night. The only thing is my ship pulled up in the water in front of it. I remember telling my parents "It's like we sailed right up among the buildings!!""
I think I'd had a great time there, in port, had I not bee paying for a car at the time. It left me broke! While everyone else was out on tours and stuff, I sat on the ship broke, rofl!
@sierrraa@xanga - cool, where? I work at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild
@JUSTAVAPORHERE@xanga - haha the best thing about HK is how extremely easy it is to get around due to the excellent public transportation, much better than renting a car! No parking fees!
@black_lie@xanga - She works at Little Sisters of the Poor. I have no idea where your place is. haha.
I haven't been to hk since 2005 and I forgot what HK is like. I can't wait to visit again! :)
I go to school in Pittsburgh and I'm from Hong Kong too!
