  • 10 DONT's of New York City

Like the 10 don’ts of Vegas we recently linked, here is a list of 10 don’ts in the Big Apple. Unlike the Vegas list, however, this list not only tells you what not to do, but what to do instead.  A New Yorker myself, I found a few things on the list to be  very true of tourists, especially the bits about eating in Times Square, comedy clubs and the Empire State Building.  There are also many “insteads” on the list I have never tried and will definitely be trying soon.

Click here to view the list.

Have you ever done any of the Don'ts on the list? What about the Instead's? What Don'ts would you add to the list?

I know it's cliched and all, but I didn't have a problem getting to the top of the Empire State Building. Then again, I went at around midnight on a Monday night/Tuesday morning in August, but still... I'm a little sad that it gets such a bad rap, because I proposed there!

I've not been to NYC other than when I was a toddler : )

I went to NYC last year with parents and we were carefully,  we are going back to NYC soon as we love the city.

For the love of god, don't drive there.

Guilty of a few: I like getting "dirty water dogs" and going to the top of the Empire State building.

I don't remember the wait being that bad for the Empire State Building, but like the first poster, I went fairly late at night.  I never tried the rest of the list.

    Don't wear bondage pants?

The only don't on their list I tried was the Empire State Building. Overall, I was fine with it. I do remember waiting, but I feel like the entire trip was consumed by that. But...security...I was wearing pants that made getting through security a bitch. After completly emptying my pockets and STILL hearing the alarms go off, they let me through because there was no woment there for a more thorough examination. >.>

Ok I live in Brooklyn and I found that list kinda pretenious and annoying. Do what ever you want when you come to New York City. Don't worry what some dumb lists says. Just have fun. And that part of coming the Smith St, come to Flatbush, Crown Heights, and East New York; get a better sense of an ungentrified Brooklyn.

thats a pretty good list. i agree with a lot of it, especially eating at times square (everything is way more expensive than it should me, not to mention crowded as can be), taking a pedi-cab (for your own safety: just don't even consider it. my dad took it once in a rush to get to work, he said it was terrifying, lol.), and shopping at herald square. its absolute madness, no matter what time or day. i've lived in nyc my whole life and i've been to many awesome restaurants, stores, lounges, clubs, etc, usually just coming across them in random neighborhoods. its nice to visit times sq once in a while but don't fall into the tourist trap and blow all your money on the things you think you should do in the city. definitely explore central park, go to the museums, check out the cool places in the village and lower east side. just enjoy nyc and make your visit unique .. don't feel obligated to do all the "touristy" things people say you must do in new york :)

I've lived in NYC and the outer boroughs for a couple years now.

I went to Tavern for restaurant week (too expensive, otherwise) bc the touristy things are cool sometimes. It was pretty fun... the decor is so over the top, it's hilarious. Another super touristy, but worth it place is serendipity 3. Celebrities like it, too, apparently. There was all of this buzz about Britney Spears when I was there (before she went nuts).

The Empire State Building is fun, too! Go at night, though. The better alternative is the Brooklyn Heights Promenade, though- at night, as well (it's a really nice part of Brooklyn).

I'm surprised they didn't mention Grey's Papaya, Papaya Dog, etc for hot dogs! Those are the best. I'll admit, I've had a good hot dog from a stand, but I was really hungry. And not all food from carts is forsaken. There's some really awesome Halal and those taco trucks are supposed to be good.

Magnolia is totes overrated. I went to a party where they had them and it wasn't even worth eating the half I had. I haven't really had amazing cupcakes, though. The fav desert places are Sweet Melissa and The Chocolate Room which are in Brooklyn, but close to the promenade (well, the ones in Cobble Hill, they both have locations in Park Slope as well). Worth the trip! And the famous ice cream places are completely worth it like Il Laboratorio Del Gelato (you can also get that at Stand which is an awesome burger place, but really too expensive).

Oi, don't do ANYTHING in Times Square. Get in and get out. I'll admit, all of the lights are pretty awesome at night, but everything is overpriced and there are SO MANY PEOPLE. Idk about the Hell's Kitchen alternative. I think anything outside TS is good, though... so many restaurants in NY, figure out what kind of cuisine you want and what area is convenient and look up reviews on yelp.com.

Idk about Lord and Taylor, but I love Bloomingdales. Crazy, yes, but so cool.
