Should I Go to a Place Where You Can't Make Eye-Contact?
I know I'm a little late in the game, but I planned to go to college in Honolulu, however, seeing as that won't happen, I've decided to go with this art school in New York. However, I've hardly ever left California, but I hear these terrible stories of New Yorkers, so I'm absolutely terrified of going there. I have a friend who moved to San Francisco from Manhattan, and she told me that on several occasions, some people have actually been STABBED or SHOT because they made EYE-CONTACT!
In SF, sure, you have your cold-hearted business people, and psychos wandering the streets, however, there are districts (such as the Haight or Castro) where complete strangers are friendly to one-another. (To prove this, I partied with a giant banana on Halloween on a bus going toward Haight, we sang songs, danced, made jokes, and I didn't even KNOW the guy. Hell, we split candy with the bus driver...)
I'm somewhat of a Xenophobe, but I hear all these stories of people getting mugged, stabbed, raped, beaten... etc. Sure, it happens EVERYWHERE, but in a huge concrete jungle with the population is up in the MILLIONS, it's bound to happen more often... I'm just petrified at the concept....Is New York a bad place to go to? Are the stereotypes true? Should I bother going to a place where you can't even make innocent eye-contact?

Umm... people in new york don't really do that unless they're insane. Same as anywhere.
lol you don't have to worry about new york people but i was told don't ride the subway/train station at night due to bad people ride it more in the evening. Also I heard make sure you hold your purse. But new york is really nice. you'll love it. it's really cool place to live and be. It's also very muilti cultural. So thats always a plus. you really don't have to worry. just make sure you don't go in the wsrong places and be careful at night.
Um, just use common sense, pure and simple.
I live in Chicago and can't stand when people are like OMGOMGarentugonnagetmuggedddd. Maybe I will, but that could happen anywhere.
Anyway, don't worry about it. Just don't do foolish things and you'll be fine.
I've met some of the coolest people I've had the pleasure of hanging out with in NY.
Crazies will be crazies. You shouldn't make contact with them in any state ha!
Haha, it's not that bad as long as you're aware of your surroundings.
just wear sunglasses :}
Why would you try to make eye contact with everyone, anyhow? Since the population is so huge, it'd be hard to look into everyone's eyes while going up an escalator.
yes
bull, i used to work there and i'm still alive! there are tons of friendly people in nyc
Was going to say the exact same thing as @d0llh0use@xanga
i feel like everyone in singapore isn't friendly, they all look so fierce. :(
and what's wrong with making eye contact. even the 'gangsters' in singapore are so sensitive, especially the guys. just because a guy casually looked/stared at you, and the guy who was casually looked/stared wants to cause a BIG FUSS.
i live in new york. people give it such a bad rap... seriously one of the best cities on earth,
If NYers are so bad, why does NY still have millions of people still living here? Shouldn't people be dying left and right, and have a hospital on each block to serve the 'shot' people? And the people left are the crazy bad ones? If it's that bad, people will move...supply and demand.
Try before you make assumptions.
Everyone is different, so I would not judge it till you have been there. Also just like any big city there is the good parts, and the bad parts. It’s all about doing your research and maybe knowing somebody who lives there before visiting.
I just watched a t.v. show a couple days ago about a girl who had a fear about NY because of stories she heard from her dad about the rudeness ect. But when they took her there and made her travel around, eat, and ask strangers for directions, she found out that just because that person had a bad experience, doesn’t mean everyone does.
wow i mean i've never been to new york but every single one of my friends/family members has and no ones ever been assaulted. i'm sure none of them thought twice about whom they made eye contact with either
i don't know where you're getting your information from but this is pretty ridiculous. unless you wander into some clearly sketchy places i dont think you have anything to worry about.
On my first trip out to NYC, I had to wait for my friends who were 8hrs behind. I wandered the streets with my luggage without a hitch. Just use common sense and you'll hopefully be fine.
No. You can make innocent eye contact, go ahead and go to NY, it is a fun place.
haha depends
but for the most part, it's true.
I live in NY. Some people are disgustingly rude and obnoxious. Stay away from ghetto neighborhoods and you'll be fine.
NYC does have some very unfriendly people, but there's still hope. I've seen and met people who are nice and approachable by my standards. The whole eye contact thing is a ridiculous stretch. However, if you're used to being surrounded by people who are hospitable and welcoming, then I suggest you rethink about moving to NYC...
@GaMeGurLsH@xanga - Your descriptions remind me of Sin City for some reason.
@heaventtonight@xanga - Still haven't had the chance to watch it yet. :(
@d0llh0use@xanga - I like this idea
.also, safety in numbers, and carrying a fake baby. >>wear sunglasses. (yes at night too)
I live here. It's really not like that, though there are some people who are aggressive like that but you just ignore them.
Give it a shot. It's an amazingly diverse city, though I'm beginning to hate on the tourists. @_@
