Since 1992, Sonkajarvi, Finland has been hosting a Wife Carrying World Contest on July 4. The contest is exactly what its title implies. It's a wife carrying contest! Win and receive your wife's weight in beer and of course the title for World Wife Carrying Champion...

The idea is to carry your wife across a course partially made of grass, sand, and gravel. And if you think that is rough, try going through dry and water obstacles threatening to make you drop your wife. Aside from dropping and hurting your wife and having her yell at you for days, you are also penalized 15 seconds for everytime you drop her!

Don't worry, for the men who don't have wives or the husbands who have wives who wish to not compete, you may carry anyone else's wife, your friend, or neighbor. She has to be at least 17 years of age and weigh 49 kilos.

If you don't win the race, have no worries. You can win most entertaining couple or couple with the best costume.

Whatever the rules may be, it seems that the most important rule is to have fun. Sounds like an awesome event to me. Maybe my husband and I will take a trip to Finland one to join in this event. You can find more about this event at their official website here.

What do you think? Would you partipate in a contest like this? Who would your partner be?

    • About Me: Age: 27, Location: New York, NY Favorite places I've visited: Trick question! I've been to so many amazing places, but if I absolutely had to pick, I'd settle on a couple places to shorten the list. Madrid, Spain because that's where I did my study abroad program when I was 18 and it was there that the travel bug bit me so hard it left a scar. I haven't been the same since. And Vietnam. That's where my family is from. Although, I'm Vietnamese American, I never actually visited Vietnam until I was 26. It was an awesome experience to learn about my family's history and I was quite pleased to show off my vietnamese language skills to the locals. It's quite a big deal for an american-born.
