For New Yorkers: How to Get Away this Summer Without Leaving the City
An article in AM New York yesterday featured some cool ideas to try this summer that will link native New Yorkers with parts of the city that they may have never seen or truly experienced. The article, titled "Biting into the Big Apple", described different food and drink tours throughout the city.
The Big Onion tour boasts as being the "the original multi-ethnic eating tour." The tour is $20 and covers a variety of cuisines. According to the description on the website, this is "a tour that mixes history and gastronomy on the multi-ethnic Lower East Side." Tasters will "learn about the Jewish East Side, Little Italy and Chinatown as we nosh our way through the neighborhood sampling foods traditional to the Dominican Republic, Eastern Europe, China, Italy, and more." Sample foods include plantains, pickles, dried rose petals, mini-cannolis, pepperoni, and mozzarella. The tour is two hours, though tourists can expect to be a little less than full as the experience is more about what you learn about the food than tasting it. Reservations for this tour are recommended and can be done on the website.
Uncle Sam's New York Tours feature a walking tour of the pubs of the West Village. Participants will be able to "drink where the Beat Generation poets got their start, experience one of New York City’s classic dive bars with an original jukebox, and live rock history on world famous Bleecker Street." For $50, including three drinks, tourists can "join us as we drink from the well that has provided the inspiration to so many of our nation’s greatest artists." The price is a little steep for my taste, though it would be interesting to seep in history and alcohol. Stops include The White Horse Tavern, Kettle of Fish, and Kenny's Castaways.
Another (free) idea is to do some research on your own, hop on the subway, and explore the Big Apple. My boyfriend and I like to ride our bikes to a different part of the city each weekend, try an authentic looking restuarant, and generally just explore. Sometimes the best way to experience a place is to avoid being a tourist and discover on your own.

How about visiting the beaches that patch the city? Historic Coney Island and Jones Beach. I heard that there is also a hidden beach on Staten Island. hahh.
And there are just tons of summer festivals and free concert series all summer. Check out the Prospect Park summer concerts, the one wich David Bryne opened this year! And I'm sure there are more at Central Park that I haven't googled yet.
A day trip up to the point of Manhattan at Fort Tryon Park and to the majestic Cloisters museum.
Friday nights at the Met rooftop bar. It has one of the most gorgeous scenes of Manhattan that I've ever caught.
NYC is incredibly affordable if one knows how to do it. It's definitely not only a city for tourists!
happy staycationing!!
