  • Have You Ever Been CouchSurfing?

Imagine traveling by yourself to a foreign country where you know no one, instantly making a friend, and never having to worry about hundreds of dollars in hotel bills.

CouchSurfing.com allows you to do just that, making travel more affordable while connecting you to people around the world. According to its website, the organization was created so every person has the opportunity to travel the world and “take part in cultural exchange.”

The non-profit group connects people around the globe, helping users find free hospitality anywhere.  The site currently has over a million users worldwide who represent 231 countries.

    CouchSurfing works like this:

First, create a CouchSurfing profile and become a member.  Then, decide where you want to go and book your flight through an airline.  After you have booked your flight, search for members within a certain radius of your travel itinerary.  Flying into Munich? Search within 20 miles of the airport to find where you can stay that night.

After you conduct a search, contact matches and request to stay.  When you receive offers back, choose who you want to lodge with. Keep in touch with your host until your flight, adjusting your plans as necessary.

Your host will likely pick you up at the airport, and you will soon be on your way to making new friends, exploring a different country from a local viewpoint, and saving a ton of money on accommodations.

CouchSurfing is aware of safety concerns, and allows users to become references or vouches for people they have previously stayed with to boost a person’s credibility.  The site also offers safety tips and informs users of proper etiquette.

Have you ever tried CouchSurfing? Would you ever try it?

I'm actually considering it-- as soon as i finish school but being a girl and all i need to take a buddy with me, atleast until i feel safe about it.

That is such a good idea!!! I would definitely do that! In fact, I'm gonna register myself right now! I'd love to hang out with travelers!

I've done it almost everytime I travel but not through a website. I have used the friend of a friend who has a cousin who has a friend network. LOL... You must be flexible and not too picky. Being open minded helps too. Don't forget to bring gifts for the family you stay with and I always try to pay for any outings they take me on as well. I also like to return the favor by opening my own home and being the friend of the cousin who has a friend of a friend who knows them when I am home.

I've done it before when I was between homes, staying on people's sofas and living out of my car.  When I travel I fully intend to do some more couch surfing.  I'd also like the next place I move to be couch surfer friendly.  It's such an awesome way to get to know people and to provide an alternative to paying for a room when all you need is a warm place to sleep.

sounds sketchy... can't say i've done that before

i think its an awesome website. i have an account but ive never "couchsurfed" for real. my brother, however, uses it all the time and has stayed with at least ten people he's met on there. he's had only good experiences, so i'd like to try it someday :)

Never done it, but plan to, and anyone coming to Puerto Rico is welcome to couchsurf at my place

i'm a user of couchsurfing and i always had good experiences… expect one time when my host said he hated gays… and i'm gay ! i felt very bad and dicriminated.

i finally found a network of gay hospitality exchange on the web where i'm sure not to get those kinds of problems anymore even if some people pretend it's kind of "ghetto" which is wrong i think.so i recommend any gays to join www.mygayst.com to travel and meet lots of nice people around the world !rico
