How Do You Plan Your Trips? Here Are Some Tips That I Use
With such a plethora of websites available, there are many resources that can help you plan your trip. I usually start with a general Google search of the destination I am interested in, then I look on ticket and hotel sites like Expedia or Orbitz to check out ticket prices.
After I get a feel for what an average ticket will cost, I go on the airlines website and book my tickets this way. Booking your ticket directly through the airline will usually save you the cost of processing fees of $10 to $20 that these trip-planning websites can add. You can book your lodging directly through a hotel's website as well. If you are looking for a hostel, try student friendly sites like STA travel.
If I know someone who has been to or is in the country or place I want to go to, I usually ask them what hostels they recommend, or I ask if I can stay with them. Never underestimate the power of couch surfing, just don't overstay your welcome. Camping is a great alternative for lodging, especially in the US. I have taken trips to the beach, thinking I would just stay in whatever hotel I found. Little did I know that a motorcycle convention was in town and all the hotels were booked. Camping to the rescue!
As far as activities, I usually check out the location's tourism website to see what kind of activities are available and a general cost. Then, I wait until I arrive and talk to the hotel front desk about booking these excursions.
Do you like to plan your trips extensively and research the location using guide books and the internet? Do you create and stick to itineraries? Or do you like to have free time to explore? Do you book your lodging before you leave for a trip?

Cool! I just did two similar posts. It's so hard to decipher through all the bargains, deals, and planning tools!
Planning a trip would outline all the days, who's going, where to visit, do some research on the attractions, the plane trips basically all that and financial wise. then you go back to the drawing board if the trip costs too much :X
I would use a professional travel agent. But then again, I am one, so I'm a bit biased!
