World Travels - Okinawa, Japan!

I've actually been traveling to quite a few places: Venice, Rome, Milan in Italy during Easter break as well as Okinawa, Japan; Bratislava,Slovakia; Salzburg, Graz, and Neusiedl and See in Austria. I'm currently based in Vienna so the Italian travels make sense but... why Okinawa, you ask? Because The Boi lives there, of course! Out of all my world travels, Okinawa was, by far, my favorite. Not because it was a tropical island, not because of the food (although... you know how I love my food), and certainly not because of the tiny Japanese ladies who are 58 and start hitting on your boyfriend in a restaurant.
Shall we start at the beginning?
The Boi was kind enough to book me tickets on Air France, which means...
Haute airplane cuisine!

Smoked salmon AND baguette? *sigh* I love the French.

People looked at me weird for taking pictures of my plane food, so I hope you appreciate it.
After eating, I looked out the window: Ain't no mountain high enough, ain't no valley low enough but... Siberia? Ihad to fly over Siberia to get to The Boi. I felt like some prince in a fairy tale, going to retrieve my princess. But that sounds awkward, so ignore that bit.

I arrived in Okinawa, after 20 + hours in planes and four differentairports (Vienna Schwechat, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Nagoya, and Naha).I told The Boi that I would be there at 4.30 pm and he's very punctualso I strode out the doors, expecting to see him at the gate and a hugesweeping hug. 5 pm. Still no Boi. Maybe the rain caught him up, it wasraining cats and dogs because it was monsoon season. 5.30 pm. Mildpanic, as I am now stuck on a Japanese island with non-existentJapanese skills. I mean, the most I can say is hi and thank you andexcuse me and I-am-Korean (like that would help me in any situation...)
Well, it turns out The Boi was waiting for an hour and a half atInternational arrivals, while I was at Domestic. Note to self: forwarditinerary to Boi next time.
So this is not my official firstmeal in Okinawa, but I was hungry the night I arrived and forgot totake pictures of delicious Japanese-style curry rice. Thus, my secondofficial meal of the trip.
And then I actually woke up from jet lag to notice The Boi. Oh yeah... you're why I came to Okinawa! Haha... just kidding.
Mine
Then we went to the American Village, where there are a lot of stores and odd Japanese knickknacks.
Apparently, one can get pliers from a coin machine:
Random shots from inside the mall:
Then the beach, one of the only times we could go because I got The Boi sick soon afterwards.
I think I got some form of swine flu in Rome, as I was the sickest I've ever been. Super high fever of 104, in bed all day and pretty much at the point where I wanted to die and call it a day. I recovered, went to Okinawa, and proceeded to give the same thing to The Boi... sadness. But anyhow, these beach pictures were taken before that:
Holes, by Louis Sachar (doesn't this photo remind you of the book?)
This photo should look familiar (it's the banner at the top of my page). Will you be my pair?
Random beach shots:
Finally, a Japanese bluebird. I mean, not really a bluebird as in thespecies, but the color was blue and... *sigh* My English is starting tosound really awkward, now that I've been in Vienna for four months.
Hope you enjoyed the pictures! Part two will be up soon.Have you been to Japan?

beautiful pictures
I love Japan... not Okinawa so much, my favorite area is Nagoya but Japan is wonderful. I was supposed to go for a month starting tomorrow but something came up so I had to pass my entire trip off to my niece who is very very grateful for the chance to go.
I might be going on a two week trip to Japan next year with my Japanese class. We'll get to see monkeys :D
Wow! Looks cool. Hm.. do you think people who don't know Japanese should go to Japan? Because I don't know a lick of Japanese, but it looks fun!
Okinawa looks like a fabulous time! I particularly love the pictures!:D
Thanks for sharing the pics with us. I loved to read your entry.
I havent been there, but Im going on a student exchange for 6 months in Chiba. hehe...
I will gladly share my experience with you when I go there.
iii-na! I just got home from a year living in Japan and teaching English. your pics just made me homesick. :( I never got to Okinawa, but I was in Shimonoseki and visited Tokyo, Hiroshima, and this really neat little town called Usa. (yes, the only reason I went was because it phonetically is the same as USA, but there were some really neat things there)
Great pics though! Very natsukashi for me!
Wow nice~~ too bad nv been to Japan b4
I hope I can go Japan for traveling too
nice pictures :*( i love japan and have always wanted to go to okinawa. its so beautiful there. you're so lucky.
Great pics!
No, but my dad lived there for about a year while in the Marines.
i love okinawa! i've been there three times, and i even went to school there for six weeks! i'm also half okinawan. and i do okinawan taiko and okinawan odori. hahah basically okinawan culture is a big part of my life.
great pictures, but the sheer frequency of which you used the term "The Boi" really annoyed me. -_-" i think it's the incorrect spelling that got me. i would absolutely love to go to japan though :P
When I went to Japan for about two weeks last summer, I wanted to go to Okinawa, but we were staying in Kyoto and Tokyo, so it was a bit of a travel. :( However, I'm going back when I go on exchange next year, so I'm sure I'll go there then. :P
@Kristenmomof3@xanga ; @karen_lynn@xanga ; @BoscosTina@xanga - Thank you!
@echois23@xanga - Why not Okinawa? I passed through Nagoya's airport, but no chance to stop by.
@quicksandbuddy@xanga - Lucky, wish I had two weeks too.
@tastytimmm@xanga - Hmm... I was driven around in a car but I think if I were taking the subway and such, I would learn just a few phrases. It's different than going to Europe without knowing a European language... I would learn the basic phrases (numbers 1 - 10, hello, how much is this, where's the bathroom, etc).
@lisame@xanga - 6 months? Waa, I'm jealous of all the food you'll get to eat there.
@pkcricket@xanga - Lol to Usa. What's natsukashi mean?
@Jacykid@xanga - Yeah this was my first time traveling in Japan, I had always traveled "through" (like stopping at airports). It was definitely worthwhile!
@d0llh0use@xanga - Definitely was lucky. All expenses paid trip :)
@Audiofreak18@xanga - Yeah I stayed on a base while I was there, it was interesting to see.
@sophia@xanga - 6 weeks, man lol I wish I could stay there for that long. It seemed like a much different culture from the main island.
@KrazyAMANDA@xanga - Meh, I just hate saying "the boyfriend" or his name over and over so I made it a trademark nickname. It could've been much more annoying, I assure you! (Honey bunches, my darling, etc).
@musinuite@xanga - Yeah, check out Okinawa, and hopefully sometime I'll get to see Tokyo (I was in a layover at the airport for 7 hours but it was too expensive to get out).
Okinawa is more of a Tourist/American military town. In other parts of Japan I have heard people refer to it as "Little America". When I visit Japan or really any country I prefer to see the less touristy locations..... the places that the "real folks" live. I like to eat and sleep in places where the natives eat and sleep and no body caters to Americans.
@moolgishin@xanga - it means "nostalgic" or - "it reminds me of something good from a really long time ago" :) It's one of my favorite words in Japanese. as is "hanamisu" which means "snot" or listerally, "nose water"
@echois23@xanga - Yeah, I got that vibe as well, it's kinda like that in Venice: more tourists than locals, it seems! But I did manage to find a traditional restaurant, it's up on my regular blog site.
@pkcricket@xanga - Lol to hanamisu. The only thing I really know in Japanese is "Kankoku jin-desu"... surprisingly came in useful on this trip.
@moolgishin@xanga - hah, yeah, that does come in use. :) I learned pretty early how to answer peoples questions as to whether I was an American, and then if I was married or not. Those were the first two questions I was consistently asked...followed by, "Do you like Japanese food?"
@pkcricket@xanga - Yes, they loved asking if I was "with" my boyfriend or not! lol. I didn't understand much about the food eating, but then again, seeing as how I was scarfing it down, there really was no need to ask if I liked the food :)
What job do you have that allows you to travel so much??
