Kangaroo Burger, Anyone?
So my friend recently visited Australia and she told me about some food that they eat that we kind of eat here...
PLUS
Viola! Kangaroo burgers. I kid you guys not.
Apparently, they say that kangaroo burgers taste "gamey", which means (I had to look it up) like wild taste that game has, kind of like deer-y taste? It's supposed to taste really earthy, strong, and tangy; it's one of those things where you have to try it to really understand the description and flavor of. They only eat a diet of weed, acorn, wood bank and etc. instead of the animals that we eat which eat grain.
I grew up as a really big meat eater, beef, pork, chicken all the way; I'll eat anything with meat. But when my friend mentioned kangaroo burgers, I kind of cringed because I think of kangaroos as animals! Then again so are chickens, cows, and pigs, but I think it's a cultural thing. Kangaroos are found everywhere in Australia, so their main meat is kangaroo meat, so I guess it's understandable.See what I mean. Kangaroo crossing. Beware!
Honestly, after getting used to the idea of kangaroo burgers, it doesn't seem all that disgusting anymore.
Other weird animal dishes.
Korean dog meat. Sadly, if someone put this in front of me, I would probably have eaten it without question. It looks like normal Asian food!
So be careful with what you eat when you're abroad, it might surprise you that what you're eating isn't what you thought it was. What other meats did you come across with while traveling abroad that you don't normally eat in your country?

I had a kangroo steak at our state fair! I have also had alligator nuggets, and sea turtle soup.
I knew I forgot to do something while in Australia! Damn!!!
Ate dog in Thailand and highly recommend no one following in my footsteps. Ugh...
in China, they offer snake, turtles, dogs (not sure if they still do that), and stuff :(
I just realized how large kangaroo feet are.
But awwwwwwww. :[
Ahem, I hear kangaroo meat has quite the kick.
@awinnerisyou@hardestlevel - I bet it really makes people jump for joy.
hmm, i don't get what the string instrument has to do with kangaroo burgers... and what is a wood bank? do you deposit bark there and withdraw seeds?
anyway... i would definitely try kangaroo meat. i've had ostrich, snake, crocodile, pigeon, eel, sparrow, rabbit, frog...
The "gamey" taste isn't really my thing. x__x
If I wasn't a vegetarian, I would totally try one.
As an Australian I have eaten 'roo', snake, emu and crocodile and various bush tucker berries and fruit.
I don't mind the gamey taste of roo, I find the texture too dense.
I have also eaten way too many body parts from a sheep than I care to remember, duck, chicken feet, pig intestines, rabbit, quail and shark.
Hmm and last week I ate snails in Spain.
i wouldn't dare. thinking of biting into that burger makes my head pop with visions of kangaroos jumping around. x.X
wow.. kangeroos seem too cute to be eaten..
i think kangaroos are cute, but in Oz, most people think of them as giant rodents. or... well.. at least the farmers think so.
now... if you said you wanted a koala burger, i think you'd find yourself running away from a lynching party.
@kristentsuii@xanga - they still serve dog in China. walked passed a dog meat restaurant when i was in Beijing. they had a big vat of dog stew simmering right out on the front step. it was very upsetting. i know it's a cultural thing, but that day, i was not pleased about being Chinese.
I've had kangaroo before--in jerky form, oddly enough. And yes, it does taste gamey, just like deer meat. I am not a fan.
I've also had alligator and an ostrich burger, too--but that was at Taste of Chicago (so not abroad for me). The alligator was yummy, but the ostrich burger was disappointing. It tasted like a veggie or soy burger. Blah. Give me my lump of dead cow any day! I want my food to moo on the plate! :)
OMG... I think... dun wanna....
