  • How Are People Reacting to the Swine Flu Around Your Area?

Swine Flu News Still Going Strong

With the swine flu still spreading and its presence in the news still going strong, I can see that people in New York City are very afraid. Since the news first broke out, the flu has now spread from Queens into Manhattan and there have been many more confirmed cases. Of course it has already spread among other states.

I've come down with a cold with symptoms of coughing and sneezing, but in the subways and on the streets, I might as well have the swine flu myself. People give me dirty looks and walk to the other side of the subway. I guess I can understand people being scared of getting the swine flu, but man! I feel like a walking plague. So I've been staying indoors until I get better as not to scare anyone.

Cuba, so far, is the first country to actually ban travel to Mexico. Other countries have suspsended flights. And we all know from a recent post that Europe is urging its citizens to avoid traveling to Mexico and the US.

But other than travel, the Swine Flu is also affecting the economy in other ways. A number of countries have banned imports of pork from Mexico and parts of the US despite doctors saying the Swine Flu is not spread through meat. The sale of face masks has gone up and people are sporting masks like the ones in the photo above. I haven't resorted to wearing a mask around town, but if I was told to, then maybe I would.

How are people reacting around your area about the Swine Flu?

Where I am in  singapore, all students have to bring their personal thermometers to school for twice daily temperature taking exercises. And all face masks have been sold out island-wide.

its not a big deal in my area, except there are 1 0r 2 news buffs that i know keep the "fear" of it alive.

  • manonfire2096@xanga

Well, people here are aware, but it's not that big of a deal yet. I'm hoping it stays that way.

  • Roadlesstaken@xanga

I say people in MD are quite aware and some are paranoid about it, but there's also a fair amount who don't see it any worse than the regular flu

  • dannyb0y@xanga

Some people are paranoid about it but for the most part people aren't very worried.

Here in TX, there's definitely a sense of officiated worry, but most people I personally know aren't really taking it *that* seriously... there have been some extreme blanket precautions including a few shut down schools, delayed activities, etc, but the way us common folk see it, people die in droves from the regular flu all the time.

Regardless of fear level, it's definitely a good time to be a Purell/Germ-x manufacturer. =)

We have one, still to be officially confirmed, case in our city. They closed the school he attended for a week. People are a bit afraid, but no one is making major changes yet.

One case of the swine flu was reported this morning in Nevada. Everyone got more nervous when they heard those news this morning. I don't know about the rest of the people in my area, but me and my friends are just shrugging it off for now. Until it comes to our own county. O.O

There's no panic here in my country. Thank the good Lord.

I live on a college campus, so there's a bunch of notices around about washing hands and shit..
So people here are paranoid about it and talking about it like it's some huge thing..

I'm in Los Angeles and I hear it mentioned about 14x a day! Mostly just kids joking around with a gleeful 'I have the swine flu, runn awwaaaayyy!'
The day it got the most publicity, though, at least four people contacted me from other cities just to see if I was "okay" since I'm living in a latino area, and a friend from the UK who was going to move to San Diego has postponed his move in date. A bunch of the highschoolers I'm working with are worried they won't be allowed to go to New York this summer if it keeps spreading. So I suppose they're kind of freaked out. I blame media, mental boredom, and living in sterile suburbia for this, though.

Here in Korea, my students had to give current events speeches this week.  Many of them talked about the flu and expressed some worry.  However, some people wear the breathing masks a lot of the time.  I've not noticed any difference in the way people behave.  It seems to me that people here are more interested in the presidential scandal.

  • angelwhite99@xanga

Haha, schools here in Texas are actually closing down for a week so that they can sanitize them! = P oh, well, no school, then. = )

  • dutchstudent@xanga

No real Panic yet in london. Of course we talked about it at the office but not more than that.

  • spidergrass@xanga

NY Metro area here...some people are reallyyy overreacting.

  • BicycleInAutumn@xanga

We just think it's one of those stunts that get pulled like in V for Vendetta.

  • gentlydreaming@xanga

Nevermind... my school's shut down for a week.  *grumble* AP exams are next week and the whole nation's sposed to be taking them at the same time, but now us endangered Texans will be taking 'alternate tests' at a later date.

I've been to so many amazing places, but if I absolutely had to pick, I'd settle on a couple places to shorten the list. Madrid, Spain because that's where I did my study abroad program when I was 18 and it was there that the travel bug bit me so hard it left a scar. I haven't been the same since. And Vietnam. That's where my family is from. Although, I'm Vietnamese American, I never actually visited Vietnam until I was 26. It was an awesome experience to learn about my family's history and I was quite pleased to show off my vietnamese language skills to the locals. It's quite a big deal for an american-born.
