Europe Urges Its Citizens to Avoid Travel to Mexico and US
A current concern that is going around is the swine flu that has had many casualities in Mexico City and even this morning caused some schools to shut down in New York City. A New York Times article announced that Europe is urging its citizens to avoid travel to Mexico or the United States unless it is urgent.
This is a map of confirmed cases so far in North America taken from this article along with precautions and symptoms.
Swine flu and humans
Swine flu viruses can be passed between pigs and humans, but human infections are not common. Most infections occur among people with direct pig contact. Sometimes a flu virus can mutate to be more transmissible to humans. An outbreak occurred among soldiers in Fort Dix, N.J., in 1976, resulting in 200 infections, several serious illnesses and one death.
Human symptoms
All flus are passed by coughs and sneezes. Symptoms can include fever, fatigue, coughing, vomiting and diarrhea. Seasonal flus typically kill the old and young. New flus like this one can kill healthy people whose own immune reactions overwhelm them.
Precautions
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends washing hands frequently, avoiding touching the face, covering the nose and mouth when sneezing and staying home when sick. People cannot be infected by eating pork.
Did you have any trips planned for these areas? Would you cancel your trips if you were planning to travel to these cities?

holy fucking shit. seriously.....wtf.
ewww. i feel so dirty just reading it.
while on the subway today, i was coughing and the guy next to me totally got up and scooted away. he made it real obvious. my co workers said the same things happened to them when they sneezed or coughed on the bus or subway.
Only one death in 1976? I read a bit about it... They thought there was going to be a pandemic, so they tried to vaccinate everybody in the U.S. Unfortunately, 25 people ended up dying from complications that were most likely caused by the vaccine. Oops.
I already live in a place where there's been 2 confirmed cases.
I live in the NY metropolitan area and people are freaking out about it, way more so than is necessary.
I feel paranoid......because i get cold and cough every year....
:(....
guys, I live like an hour away from mexico and am in contact with people who travel to mexico a lot...
I'll see what happens, definitely washing my hands, and taking precautions right now.
Great. I live in SoCal. It seems like they're a bit paranoid but these precautions seem necessary.
I keep coughing at work. I wonder if my co-workers are scared that I have it...
Hehe I was sneezing this morning in the Tube you should have seen their faces:P
But 2 guys which are doing the same minor as I do are in Mexico now to do their internship they are there for another 4 months I wish them all the luck in the world.
One case in ohio. I accidentally ordered a ham and pineapple pizza before reading this article. One case isnt enough to stop me from eating it. I hope I live.
I'm kind of curious to how these new viruses come about though.
its all a hype in my book. i dont think it would spread so quickly if they didnt make such a huge deal about it
