Japan is well known for it's unique fashion sense so it shouldn't come as a major shock to see a fashion trend as different as this emerge in the 90s. While Americans were wearing baggy clothes during this time, a fashion style became popular in Japan among girls in their early 20s known as ganguro. Together with a dark tan and outrageous hair color, these girls would splash on white concealer as eyeshadow and lipstick.

To complete the look, these ganguro girls would wear platform shoes and brightly-colored outfits. Miniskirts, multiple bracelets, and stickers on the face are also common. The fashion trend eventually fizzled by the time the new millenia hit but ganguro girls can still be seen in Japan.

If this style became popular in your country, would you go ganguro?

absolutely not
nope
scary
Prolly not. I don't tan and I'd look like death warmed over.
whoa! look at the first picture! there's a whole crowd of them! i wouldn't do this because it seems to be a lot of work and i'm pretty low maintenance. haha. and my husband thinks it's scary.
I'd do that for fun or something, but not as an every day thing. It'd be fun to try whether it comes to my country as a trend or not.
Ironically, the Ganguro look came about as a way to mock western fashion... dark tans with white-blond hair and loads of makeup, which is in direct contrast with what is considered beauty in most eastern countries.
And the pictures you showed are very extreme examples which probably wouldn't be worn day to day. They're like the magazine covergirl compared to an everyday woman. Here's some pictures I found of more typical ganguro girls.

pretty much horrendous. this is one fashion trend i cannot understand- at least Uggs are comfortable!
No way...totally not attractive. I prefer the harajuku girls or lolita girls to this...lol.
Nope.
The Japanese have a strange sense of style.
that is plain scary.
hell no. it looks like they've got some weird skin disease that turns their skin oompa loompa-like and are poorly attempting to hide it with overly colorful makeup.
haha how fun. everyday is halloween. got to give it up to the japanese for creativity and originality.
No thank you
no way. i can naturally stand out being just myself :D
they stood too long inside the spray tanning booth; you're suppose to turn when you see the red light flashing! reminds me of that episode when ross from the friends tv show decided to get an artificial tan. I think they are actually mocking those dumb blonde playboy barbie wannabes.
Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
YES
the funny thing is, that style is not even popular in japan... matter of fact, it's rare to see a ganguro on the streets of tokyo...
What on earth.
Sorry i am more of a natural girl. i dont overdo my makeup and i dont tan. It does look like a lot of work though. I like to splash on makeup and run. interesting story.
awesome.
this is old news
I love the harajuku/lolita style though it's awesome!
No... scary.
I perfer my style, the lolita style
