Yep, I travel between DC and Pittsburgh all the time. That's about an 8 hour trip, and I honestly prefer it to going by car, even though that's a 5 hour trip and I don't drive anyway (I'm a student and I don't keep a car on campus). I don't get a headache when I read on the train, and there's a ton more leg room =)
In Hong Kong, the trains are always so crowded. However, they are really convenient as you can go most of the places by them.
I trained it from Minneapolis to Chicago -and back. It was Amtrak. It was nice to not have to drive in the dark. We packed a good food kit which made the trip nice to be able to snack on stuff, which was good, because we weren't impressed w. the food car's hours or food.
It was only a 10 hour ride but it was pretty cool. Could walk around if we got too bored.
To this day I still remember some of the conversations I heard going on around me.
Yep, all the time!
Well, they're usually short trips from my suburb to the city, which is an hour away. But I've taken a train from Chicago to New Orleans before - something like 19 hours.
I think train is absolute favorite way to travel. Cars make me carsick and they're too crowded, planes are scary to me, I hate it when my ears pop, and you just see clouds. Planes are too fast too - I guess if you're in need of getting somewhere fast that's good, but when I travel I like to enjoy the travel itself, not just the destination. In a train you get to appreciate the distance, and see wherever you're going.
yes, train is my favorite mode of transportation. I went from Chicago to L.A. via Amtrak. I also went from D.C. to Orlando. I also went from London to Paris. Paris to Switzerland. Switzerland to Salzburg. Austria to Munich.
Plus, I ride the L in Chicago evey day.
I've gone from Greensboro to DC, and back, quite a few times.
It ranges from 5-7 hours. Blegh.
I travel all the time by train. The longest trip was one to Paris, it took me about 12 hours.
does subway count? i've been on the bullet train in taiwan and japan. those things are fast. from taipei to kao hsiung usually takes hours but by bullet train it only takes a few minutes or half an hour i forgot. no wonder its called bullet train.
Yes. I've traveled from London to Paris and from London up to Glasgow.
I've travelled by train a few times, only within the country though. It took six hours or so to get from where I was to where I wanted to be.
I've traveled by train a few times...the longest was an 8 hour trip.
I traveled from Grand Rapids, Michigan to Chicago. It wasn't too bad. I was bummed that our group (6 of us) didn't get to all sit together. And the seats weren't all that comfortable. But it wasn't too bad. It was cheaper then paying for gas and parking downtown Chicago. I'd probably do it again.
@shes_lump@xanga - I'm very jealous of you! :)
hmm I've traveled by train before.. when I was in Europe.. all around Germany, and then from Germany to Poland and Prague. I stopped by those cities, but the train ride was long but interesting in a way. I liked it and I thought it was fun a good experience
Yeah but the trip was short. It was within New York.
I travelled on the train in Egypt, great experience, very modern trains - not like you'd expect. They were actually much nicer than the ones here in NZ and trains I've travelled in in America..
I used to live in Singapore and caught the MRT a lot..we need that here in NZ :P makes commuting soo much quicker!!
Next year I plan to go on the TransSiberian across Russia for 3 weeks, now that will be a real "train" experience!! :P
From Amsterdam to Paris. Apparently it's cheaper than flying.
And from my local train station to New York City, though that's not really uncommon.
I took the Eurostar from London to Paris and hopped on another train to Marne-la-Valée. And no, I wasn't going to Disney World.
I've also taken the train from SW Michigan to Chicago and back.
I've been on the tube through London and the subway through Chicago.
I can't remember how long the trips were though. I never really timed them.
I've traveled by train from Tampa to New York, it was over night and so much fun. And you know the consant Philadelphia to New York and stuff like that. And I've traveled from SC to New York too, I forgot about that until just now.
I live in Japan, it's actually more preferable method of getting around then driving. Their rush hour is worse than down town LA's rush hour. So yes, I take the train very frequently.
The longest train trip I've taken has been the transmongolian railway (Russia/Mongolia/China) - though we did break it up a bit by getting off here and there in the middle.
last summer, I took the commuter train into boston weekly to take a Java class at Boston U.
As far as commuter trains go, I've taken the Metra from the suburbs to Chicago countless times; the South Shore from NW Indiana to Chicago; the El (elevated trains) in Chicago; the light rail in Baltimore; and the Metro in Washington, DC.
But as for a real, extensive train trip--my dad, grandma, cousin, and I rode on Amtrak on the Southwest Chief from Chicago to Los Angeles when I was 5. The ride took 2 days, but I loved every bit of it! There was an observation car with glass ceilings so you could watch the sky at night as you traveled along. Along the way, we saw swamps, gorgeous deserts with extinct volcanoes, the Rocky Mountains, and much more! We even got to buy some turquoise jewelry from local Native American tribes on the fueling stop in Albuquerque, NM. It was so much fun! If only Amtrak weren't so expensive nowadays...
i really want to! to Idaho this year! but I dont' know what I'm going to do tehre
i went to chicago from st. louis by train, which is about 5 hours. i hate it. it's always freezing on the train no matter what the weather is outside, they make you sit next to complete strangers unless you're already with someone you know, the food is gross and expensive, the bathrooms are always taken or not working, and there's no room. i've done this twice and will never do it again.
