Texan versus New Yorker
Versus
By now my faithful readers know that I live in Texas, but my parents live in New York. How did this happen? Well...I lived in Texas my entire life. Born here, raised here, a good ol' Southern Gal through-and-through. My parents, however, are both former military. Now my good ol' Pops is in the traveling sales/traveling teaching business. A few years back, while I was a senior in high school, Pops was offered a nicely-paid position to teach in upstate New York and BADA BOOM! My parents and my little brother magically transported to foreign country. Why? Easy. Daddy-o likes to travel, likes to experience new things..and my mother tends to go along with whatever he says.
So they move about a month after I graduate from high school. July 4, 2005, to be exact. Kinda gave me a new meaning for Independence Day, huh? But anyway. Why did I decide to stay? Well...I could give you a whole lot of reasons, but it all boiled down to wanting to stay with my boyfriend (now fiancé). Maybe it was childish at the time, but personally it was one of the best decisions I ever made. I became independent, grew up, and pretty much lived a charming college life.
Of course I went to visit my parents as often as possible. And that, folks, is the reason for this post. Please keep in mind that these are my observations (and my biases, ahem), and are meant to make you laugh!
The differences between Texans and New Yorkers:
1. Texans have approximately 3 pairs of boots each. A work pair, a church pair, and an everyday pair. New Yorkers seem to think that boots are only a prop in a western movie.
2. In Texas, liberals are considered the oddballs. In New York, conservatives are the wacky ones.
3. Pretty much every Texan has shot a gun. Most people own at least one. Over half own a concealed license and carry it to church. Most New Yorkers have never even seen a gun.
4. In Texas, I address every single person, young or old, that I come across as "ma'am" or "sir". While in New York, I have to be careful not to address anybody this way, else they murder me in my sleep.
5. I can walk through a door in Texas, blindfolded, without ever having to touch it because I know somebody will hold it open for me. It's best not to try this in New York, or else you'll walk away with a bruised noggin.
6. "Y'all" is considered proper grammar down south. It is slang up north.
7. Texas schools are extremely diverse, so much so that in most schools whites only make up about 50%. In New York, you're considered "diverse" if there is a 5% minority population.
8. New Yorkers can't walk outside when the humidity index is higher than 15%. This makes Texans laugh, as their average day is at a humidity level of 85%.
9. It is hot in New York when the temperature reaches 80. 80 in the springtime/fall in Texas is just right, in the summer is considered to be extremely cool, and in the winter it is to be expected.
10. Texan women are very pretty. New York men are also very pretty. They wear the same size clothes.
11. Texas has Chuck Norris. In fact, he has a ranch 25 minutes away from where I live, and I get to pass it every time I go to my fiancé's parent's house. New York has.....hookers?
Can you think of any other differences or things you might have heard about New York and Texas?

oh, interesting. A couple of my classmates are from Texas :) but they don't really wear boots.
cool, lots of untrue stereotypes. what i enjoy reading the most.
@bluebear2cute@xanga - @black_lie@xanga - Thanks! I know these are stereotypes...this is supposed to be a fun post, I hope people don't get offended...
Haha, these are funny. I was born in Texas, moved to California, and now living in New York.
I would go back to Texas just for Chuck Norris! He's badass!
i live in long island in new york and all those are soooo true the only one i disagree with is 7
@Mike_Malignant@xanga - Yeah, 7 is a bit of a stretch...okay, a lot of a stretch!
But it's really true in the smaller towns in upstate NY.
@anne - Chuck does make it pretty excellent! Hehe.
@freeforming@xanga - yeah that is true
Yeah...New York rocks. I had so much fun in NYC when I was there. But I have family in Texas so I can't complain too much.
Now a list like this would be interesting if it included Californians versus Texans...hmmm something to think about?
Texas has Chuck Norris. 'Nuff said. There is no comparison.
My little brother is going to college in upstate NY, I went to UT. Hook 'em. ^_^
@desertrose2890@xanga - You should totally write one!
@dannyb0y@xanga - Amen. :)
@chix0rgirl@xanga - I'm an Aggie (gig 'em!) and my little brother is planning on going to college in upstate NY! Crazy!
O: You forgot that everything is bigger in Texas!
loved 10.

@pillowpixies@xanga -
@aZnPrinCess888@xanga - Thanks! I thought it was pretty observant...lol
@methodElevated@xanga - Just a little.
I've lived in Texas my whole life. Took a choir trip to New York City my senior year and learned that the hot dogs are better in New York but the people are friendlier in Texas. My goodness I encountered two fellows on a subway that couldn't be more stereotypical and one of them screamed "Welcome to New York! Happy G#$ Da&% New Year!"....it was March. Then we came across a very nice couple, they were tourists from Dallas. Crazy. But I still LOVED New York.
I resent some of the stuff here. I don't have any cowboy boots, nor do I own a shotgun. It's true about the door thing... that's just southern hospitality. And the school thing is true, at least from my experience. My high school was about 50% white, with many hispanics and many blacks. I would say we're friendlier... more willing to talk to anybody and everybody... that's another part of southern hospitality.
@Shellar@xanga - I love NY, too! I think I'm just partial to my home state, though.
@pinkcrayon78@xanga - I don't have any cowboy boots either, but I have shot several guns (the post says shot a gun, not shotgun, lol, my bad). I'm sorry you resent some of this, it's just meant to be a silly comparison! Thanks for reading and commenting, though!
Anywhere in the south is better.
Warmer weather = less chance for snow storms!
@chix0rgirl@xanga - woot! Hook 'em for sure!
no one holds doors open in ny?? haha i'm from texas... and completely texan. I love my state. and yes texas girls are VERY VERY pretty.
