I'm Considering Joining the Peace Corps - Would You Join?
Recently, I've been doing a lot of research of the Peace Corps. It seems like a great way to make a difference and live in another culture. Although, there are what some would consider drawbacks; the program sends people to impoverished countries thus not only do volunteers have to assimilate into a new culture, but they also live without the luxuries they might be used to.
So could you do it? Spend 27 months in another country helping others? Especially if living conditions aren't what you are used to? Have you ever lived in a country other than your native one for a significant period of time? How did you assimilate?

I wish, I'd love to go but I'm out of the age range.
I plan on doing it in about 15 years. After I'm done with college and I've been teaching for a while.
I met a couple of people in Brazil who were in the Peace Corps and they were loving the experience they had. Seems like such an awesome experience.
I would love to (and have seriously considered it), but it has the very real possibility of stripping away all that's left of my sanity. So I decided not to pursue that route.
I've seriously thought about it... and am still seriously considering it. I'm planning on getting my degree in English and then, possibly, teaching English while in the Peace Corp, wherever it is they send me to.
My only drawback would be how long I'd be away for... I'd miss my family and friends too much.
Plus the life or death dangers in many countries these days.
It would be difficult and confusing and terrifying, but all my life, I've wanted nothing more than to make a difference. Helping others is more important to me than being comfortable, and I think joining the Peace Corps is an excellent was to do just that.
Yes, join it. Except keep in mind it's not what you might image it to be. I know couple people who had their best friends/buddies joining the peace corps. They came back saying it is very rewarding and gained tons of experiences, but it's not what they expect or image it to be.
I'm actually applying this summer, so I can leave sometime in 2010 after I finish college. I'm not 100% sure though, but I can withdraw my application, so may as well. Life is too short to not do everything you want.
depends on why you're doing it. i did it for the experience of helping out other people, who ultimately did me more good than i did them ironically enough, and I got some money toward a graduate degree, which was a nice perk.
I don't think I would at this time but it's something I may have considered in the past.
I'll let you know in December. I'll be going to a country for about six weeks (two months).
i've been to 3rd world countries before. err..i wouldn't join though...
