  • Traveling Tips for the Adventurous

    Guest post by JadedJanissary

I've traveled quite a lot over the past 5 years or so (since goingaway for college and embarking upon my education and career), and havelearned a good bit of helpful tips for traveling.  So, here's a few ofthem -
12 Tips for Traveling (if you're adventurous)

    12) Maps are a good idea - You'll probably get more lost than you expect at least once.

    11) Wearcomfortable shoes, and bring something warm, because between airportsand timezones and continents, a lot can change in the weatherconditions.  The key is layers.  Flip flops, btw, are a bad idea fortraveling.  In some places, ankle support might save your flight, yourteeth, or your life.

    10) Don'tbe afraid to break the normal expectations of tourists and travelers. Some of the best pictures and experiences are in unexpected places offthe beaten path.  Explore them with gusto.

    9) A rudimentary understanding of the local language is a good idea, because there's a good chance they don't know yours.

    8) Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD.

    7) Get to know the locals.  A nice cup of coffee is  a great place to start, and it's usually pretty cheap.

    6) Speaking of money, be aware that you get what you pay for in cheap hostels.  Some things are worth more than money.

    5) Go with friends.  It'll be more fun that way much of the time.

    4) The sad places are worth visiting too.  They'll force you to be honest about life and mankind in general.

    3) Some people won't ever believe your best stories.  Don't sweat it.

    2) Different cultures think different things are fun.  Give it a go, see what happens.

    1) When in Rome - eat Indian food.  It's cheaper than the Italian.

Do you have any tips of your own?

Good trip tips!  I agree with just about everything except for the flip flop warning and going off the beaten path.

    Reason why...

    1. I love flip-flops...all my best traveling has been with my flip-flops...but I do everything in them, even climb mountains.

    2.  As a single, young lady, it can be dangerous to travel too far off the beaten path when in a new place and by yourself.  That said, in the right environment, or with the right companions, it definitely is the best thing ever.  I prefer to eat in hole-in-the-wall restaurants than the ones with big signs out front...they have better food and better conversation, even when you don't speak the language. :)

I didn't know this part of Xanga existed!!  How cool!

If you don't understand the local language, just point or use sign language.
