Getting to Boston for Less Than a Week's Paycheck

When traveling between cities, it's important to keep a budget in mind. I used to date a guy in Boston, Massachusettes while I lived in Brooklyn, New York, and it never would have worked out between us for as long as it did (two years!) if I hadn't done my thrifty research.

A trip from NYC to Boston one way will cost:

    with Amtrak (train): $140.00
    with Continental Airlines (plane): $49.00
    with Greyhound (bus): $43.00
    with Peter Pan (bus): $35.00
with Chinatown Fung Wah/Lucky Star (bus): $15.00

The Chinatown buses are well known in NYC for their cheap and fast travel between major cities including NYC and Washington DC ($20), and NYC and Philadelphia ($10!). What also seems to be synonymous with "Chinatown buses" is the word "dangerous." They, however, have never had a fatality during a trip, while Greyhound, a more "reputable" company, has had many.

I spent every other weekend for two years on the Chinatown buses and never had a problem. They saved me a ton of money, and I never felt at risk or nervous. The only cheaper way to get to Boston would be to walk (and even I'm not that cheap)!

Do you have any suggestions for traveling on a budget?

That bus is so dangerous! It has failed inspection multiple times, gotten in numerous crashes, and is not of the greatest quality! I would never take the Fung Wah.

I've taken the chinatown buses quite a few times. They're so cheap!

I've taken a few of the chinatown buses before and they were pretty decent but after watching the news report about how some have caught on fire and are not really safe, worries me. I think I would still prefer the Greyhound/Peter Pan buses as a form of grounds transportation.

I went from NY to Philly last weekend for 50 cents round trip on Megabus =P Megabus and Boltbus are less shady compared to the Chinatown bus, and are comparable in price, if not even cheaper. They also depart from Penn Station, rather than Chinatown, which makes it somewhat more convenient (for me anyway). There's always some sort of online coupon code you can search for on google. I used the code "greenbus" on Megabus.com for my almost-free trip, not sure if it still works.

yeah, boltbus is awesome! If you book early enough you can get to boston for a dollar (same with megabus), and other places. I just found my favorite ever bus from nyc-toronto (it also stops in other ny locations) which is also available starting at a dollar and runs from greyhound (the neon bus), although i paid 15. its similar to bolt bus in that it has great leg room, free wi-fi, movies, plugs, etc. and in my case there were only 10 other people on a bus that could fit 55. it was such a beautiful change to my last greyhound experiences.

these buses are actually upgrades from what it was before

I'm gonna go ahead and throw in another plug for BoltBus and Megabus, mmkay?

Megabus: Three words: Sweet double-decker. Boltbus: Four words: Leather seats and WiFi. With outlets. Both as cheap as (or cheaper than) Fung Wah. Safer and cleaner, too!
