  • 46-Year-Ban on Travel to Cuba May Be Lifted

As some of you may know, U.S. citizens and Cuban exiles are restricted from any type of travel to Cuba.

Well, after 46 years of banning travel to Cuba, all of this might change according to this article I stumbled on. If passed, the bill called The Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act will allow U.S. citizens and Cuban exiles to travel to Cuba for the first time since 1963.

Some politicians are against this bill according to an excerpt from the article linked above.

"The bill has gone too far," said Francisco "Pepe" Hernandez, president of the Cuban American National Foundation. Cuban exiles should visit their families whenever they want, but tourists shouldn't spend money in resorts that Cubans are barred from. "It's improper and should not be allowed until the Cuban government makes some reforms," he said.

Would you travel to Cuba if the bill passes?

Actually, until seeing this, I didn't even realize that travel to Cuba was banned. When I thought that people could go there freely (IE: Before now) I didn't want to go there, so I assume that I will still have no plans of going there.

I still wouldn't go, for my own safety, but American citizens should have the option.

@EarthsAzureLight@xanga - Safety? It's safer than Mexico, from which a story is published in the news every month about some Canadian getting stabbed or something and their police doing nothing. Yet that place gets loads of travellers.

Anyways, I went two years ago. The beaches were beautiful, some say they're the best in the world, I'm not sure since I've only been to Cuba and Tunisia. Cuba had nicer ones though! The people were so nice...

The only danger I can say there is is tipping too much. Because people expect to be tipped for everything (including letting you use their washrooms.). So just say no.. .and bring items like pencils or toys for your maid + hotel crews.

I have friends that were going to Havana, but their cab driver wasnt a real cab driver so they were pulled over. They thought they were going to get in major crap, but turns out that the "Cubans love tourists" and were only itnerested in the fake cab driver, who had done it before.

    @GreedoCH@xanga - I wouldn't go to Mexico either for vacation. =\

  • GreedoCH@xanga

@EarthsAzureLight@xanga - Hehe... I wouldn't either. But really, Totalitarian regimes make great tourist spots as long as you don't go out in the wild.

If you're Cuban-American you can go there to see family.

I also know of non-Cubans who were allowed to study Spanish there (they're American).

The AIDS/HIV rate in Cuba has shot in the last few years and that needs to be addressed too.

I'd go in a heart beat!  I think the whole embargo thing is stupid and only hurts the Cuban people.

Besides, I've read that Cuba has one of the most pristine marine sanctuaries in the world.

  • mshelenbui@xanga

hmm... Cuba is not on my list to visit right now.

  • dannyb0y@xanga

I would like to visit Cuba one day.

  • apatheticbyte@xanga

    I don't think so...

Cuba is scary it seems like.

  • Lil_Firefly_25@xanga

I wouldn't visit immediately after the lift, but maybe one day.

  • Dysfunctional_Coping@xanga

Wait....but my church already has a missions trip to Cuba planned for this summer?

  • malina229@xanga

I'm Canadian, and, to be honest, we're kind of hoping it doesn't pass, because the prices will shoot up there...

The whole travel ban is ridiculous, in my opinion... it isn't dangerous at all. In fact, it's a lot safer than a lot of places in the US. The people are awesome, laid-back, and sincere, and they don't hate Americans, for the most part. I understand why the US is doing it - principles and all that jazz... but, well, meh. People seem to think Cuba is miserable or something... and yes, it definitely isn't a "developed" country, but they definitely aren't miserable down there. In fact, they're a lot more cheerful and life-loving than most North Americans. As a tourist, it's awesome down there.

Then again, we Canadians do take advantage of the fact Americans usually avoid Cuba... so, if the bill doesn't pass, well, I wouldn't be crushed.

@Dysfunctional_Coping@xanga - You could be flying to Canada or Mexico and then to Cuba.... ?

  • Dysfunctional_Coping@xanga

@malina229@xanga - yea but they arent.  maybe there is an exception for missions work and service teams.  maybe its just a tourist ban.

I would like to travel to Cuba but would take someone with me for safety purposes and being that I don't travel much.

I've been to so many amazing places, but if I absolutely had to pick, I'd settle on a couple places to shorten the list. Madrid, Spain because that's where I did my study abroad program when I was 18 and it was there that the travel bug bit me so hard it left a scar. I haven't been the same since. And Vietnam. That's where my family is from. Although, I'm Vietnamese American, I never actually visited Vietnam until I was 26. It was an awesome experience to learn about my family's history and I was quite pleased to show off my vietnamese language skills to the locals. It's quite a big deal for an american-born.
