Gadgets I Must Bring With Me on My Travels
All things come in good and evil forms. 30 Rock and According to Jim. Modest Mouse and Nickelback. Chocolate and white chocolate. The power of a game to suck away time is not so awesome when you look at the clock and realize it's 2:45 in the morning and you have to get up for work in four hours.
However, that same hour-sucking power is fantastic when you have a lengthy flight in front of you -- I love those times when I boot up my DS after takeoff and start playing, only to be surprised to hear the announcement that it's time to turn off all electronic devices in preparation for landing and realize four hours have passed. It's also great if you know you're going to be somewhere without a lot of other entertainment options -- my family members live in small towns, so having a console you can flip on whenever you get bored helps make the time a lot more enjoyable.
What is not good about traveling with all of these electronics, however, is just the sheer volume of crap you end up toting around. On our last trip home over the holidays, the electronics packing list included a laptop, a DS lite (mine), an original DS (my husband's), my PSP (a.k.a. the Lumines machine), and an Xbox 360, plus both of our cell phones and two iPods. Plus of course, the eight different chargers/power cords that all of these devices required. And that was the pared-down list -- we cut out the second laptop and the Wii that were part of the original plan.
It's pretty ridiculous, I know, but I swear we use everything we bring. While devices like the iPhone can go some of the way toward cutting down the load (at least for those who aren't signed up for some super-lengthy contract with a carrier other than AT&T, like me), I don't see myself ever going down that road -- I have issues with remembering to charge devices, so I'd have a hard time using up battery life on playing a game or listening to music if I knew it might result in no cell phone. Plus, I like variety
So I don't see our luggage load getting any lighter, especially not with new family member Baby J around to be indoctrinated into our electronic device-loving ways. And since I'm not holding my breath for Sioux Center or Glasgow to be developing a crazy new social scene any time soon, I guess I just need to get used to hauling that extra bag around -- either that or start training this kid to be a pack mule early.

What kind of electronic gadgets do you bring on your travels? How many do you bring?

I always bring my iPhone and DS. When we go to family events we bring the wii (fun for all!) and when we are gone for a while far from home we bring one of our laptops and the iPod. Actually the iPod always comes!
Always my iPod and my phone.
And my network provider texts me, welcoming me to whatever country i'm in at the time, about a million times.
That in itself makes it worth taking it on holiday with me :)
phone, laptop, cameras, camera equipment, and ipod. although the phone and ipod don't really get used when i'm on vacation. i just forget about them and they sit in the bottom of my bag as i'm out taking pictures. =)
I usually take a shaver, a camera (which has only recently been a digital), and a music device. I don't own any portable consoles and I wouldn't travel with a home console unless I really needed to (although I travel by car with lots of table top games regularly).
I always bring my cell phone, iPod, laptop and camera. I always bring Sudoku and a good book with me as well. (Yes I know those aren't electronics!) I have a Gameboy system, but really don't use it anymore.. I've been debating about getting a Nintendo DS, but I'm undecided on that...
My dad insists on bringing our laptops (although most of the time we're somewhere by a lake with no Internet connection), and I always bring my mobile and iPod. And all the chargers.
I don't play games but I definitely bring my mp3 player, laptop, and digital camera. I forgot to buy an adapter for Vienna so for the first night, I had no electronics O_o;; Only then did I realize how dependent I was on electronic things. And promptly turned on the TV in my room. :)
I always bring my mobile phone. Lately, my camera and my iPod. I never bring my laptop because I want to enjoy my holiday AWAY from it, not WITH it!
camera phone, mp4 player, laptop and CHARGERS!
hmmm phone + charger, mp3 player (which is quite big) + charger, cameras (4 of them, just 2 reflex and 2 toycameras) + charger + lenses. I was thinking to buy some DS or some other thing but I changed my mind and decided to keep on buying crosswords instead..
