Best Way To Hold Your Knife and Fork - England Has it Down
Guest blog submitted by Thy Nguyen
Cut with knife using right hand, put knife down, switch fork from left to right hand, stab food, eat, switch hands, pick up knife with right hand, repeat.
Highly inefficient.
I noticed that here in Britain, people know how to use their left hands, while my left arm lays lame.
They hold the fork with their left hand, knife on their right hand, cut food by holding the knife in front (not behind) of the fork, and never switch hands or put any silverware back down.
Hmm, must try that sometime. How do you hold your knife and fork?

I'm left handed. knife in left hand, fork in right to cut food.
Then put knife down, and use fork in left hand.
right hand for beverage.
I right handed, knife in left hand, fork in right hand, as for drinks depending on what is sitting next to me, how many people we are entertaining for, space wise.
I do it as the English do. =)
i do it that way, i was raised by people educated in britain. the first way is so awkward
wth?! I am left handed and I have always used both hands on my silverware. pretty sure most of my family does the same!
I'm English and never even thought there could be any other way of holding a knife and fork. That first description sounds completely retarded (no offense meant)!
I do it that way because I realized that I couldn't cut anything with my left hand. So I have to switch.
That's how I've always done it.. i didn't think there was any other way lol.
i now ok ar

thnks all your love and support ^^
i used to do it the first way, but taught myself to do it the british way i guess haha. it depends on what mood i'm in that determines which way i use
The first way is good for me right now because I'm trying to make myself chew my food more...haha. I use to just inhale my food. It seems so proper too.
I'm english and the english way seems more logical than the other way.
I do as the English do. Passing my fork is just stupid when I should be perfectly capable of the same action with my left hand.
I'm very left-handed, so... I cut meat with my fork in my right hand, my knife in my left hand, but then I have to put the knife down and switch the fork to my left hand so I can pick up the food and eat it. lol I can't cut with my right hand, and I can't get the food to my mouth with my right hand. I've tried, and missed.
@blufrogz37@xanga - Yay for lefthandedness. It really does make eating a project sometimes.
Isn't that how everyone eats?
The same way, is it not the only way?
Obviously not.
They're not the only ones who "have it down" either.
i cut all of my meat with fork in left had and knife in right, then switch and eat my meal.
I kinda do it the British way... but normally I just cut up the whole thing of meat before I even attempt to eat any of it. It just seems to be the most efficient way.
thats how people eat not only in england but in the majority of europe.
when i first stayed with an american family, i thought they were stupid because they couldnt use both hands to eat. XD well, turns out its normal in america.
here, only children eat with only a fork. little kids get small cut up pieces of food so they can eat by themselves without making a mess.
looks like americans never got past that stage... ;)
I do it the reverse of what the Brits do: knife in right hand, fork in left hand. No switching.
I'm left handed, so knife in right hand, fork in left. Easy peasy!
The same way as the English. My mother made me watch Miss Manners when I was little, and that's how she did it.
To be honest I live in UK. That is how you are shown how to do it as a child
I do it the inefficient way, I always switch hands
I thought that was the way you were supposed to do it...
