I've been meaning to travel and backpack through Southeast Asia and one of the countries I want to visit is Thailand. I've read about so many cool things to do and see there.
For example, I've been hearing a lot about the island of
Phuket. This is one of the major destinations, people have suggested that I visit.
I'm very interested in visiting the city of
Lopburi which is also known as Monkey Town and looking at photos, you won't need an explanation for its nickname.
There is the
Full Moon Party in Koh Phangan that is thrown once a month of the island of Koh Samui.
Chiang Mai which boasts some of the most beautiful landscapes.
And we're most likely flying into
Bangkok.
There are so many places I'd like to see in Thailand and those are just a few. I know that I don't know everything there is to know yet.
Have you been to Thailand or know someone that has? What are some other suggestions that you have for me? Thanks in advance for your help!

I have never been to Thailand.
I loved Chiang Mai. When you get there, you can either rent a moped to drive or just hire tuk-tuks or a song-tau to get where you want to go. tuk-tuks seat 2 people and a song-tau can hold up to 12 or 15. They are usually cheaper too. (Never pay more than 10 baht for a ride. on a song-tau, 5 baht is enough) You can also go hang gliding in the mountains. That was amazing. Of course, visit the night market open 6pm-6am. Avoid the day market, or at least only go once. And when you go, get cheesecake from the bakery. Strawberry was my favorite. They also have mango. Also try to go to the Sunday market. They have all kinds of amazing hand-made stuff there. Great food (take pepto before you go) and there's a cute little clothing store that has all natural clothes and accessories for men and women. It's called Chiang Mai Cotton.
They have western hotels in the city, the Lotus hotel and the Chiang Mai Orchid. The Lotus is nicer, but the Orchid is cheaper. They are both good and you get to use a toilet in your room, rather than waiting your turn for the squatty down the hall.
Don't worry about not speaking Thai. Some people know a little english. Especially in the markets. They know numbers and stuff. They know enough to rip you off. But the hotels also have these cards that say "Take me to ________place" on one side in English and Thai and "Take me to ________hotel" on the other side so that there's no confusion.
Down the road a little way, there's a place in the airport plaza with a movie theatre in it. (like the 4th floor or something) and they show movies in English with Thai subtitles. For the equivalent of 5 USD, you get "emperor seating" which includes complimentary lychee juice, a blanket and pillow, and a big red reclining chair. There's about 10 of them in the theater so they might sell out, but $5 is a lot of Thai money. Normal seats are around $2.
Hope this helps and I hope you have a good time. Chiang Mai is my favorite place in the whole world.
I've been to Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket. Both times I've been to Thailand I was on a tour so I didn't get to experience the true authentic Thailand. I would skip Pattaya, it was very dirty and ugly. The food in Thailand was amazing. My favorite dish was this curry crab dish. It was delicious! I heard that Koh Samui can be more expensive that Phuket but it is definitely not as hectic as Phuket.
You're talking about a party vacation. Every destination you have mentioned is a tourist trap designed to make you happy in a warm climate. They have nothing to do with visiting Thailand.
I hope you have a wonderful vacation. It is a beautiful place.
I've never been there before, but many of my friends have been there. Everything is cheap. The food is so delicious and views are absolutely beautiful. Definitely, it's a great place for vacation.
I liked Chiang Mai a lot. It has a night market that stretches on forever. I also loved Koh Tao, which was the island where I learned to scuba dive. I heard Phuket is actually pretty overpriced for Thailand since it is a popular tourist attraction. A lot of friends recommend everyone to go to Koh Phi Phi instead because it is a beautiful island and it isn't as populated as Phuket.
I went through the tourist trap. When I was in Bangkok and tuktuk driver drove my friend and I to a travel agent and she sets up everything I wanted to do for 2 weeks, including trekking to minority village in Chiang Mai (with elephant riding and bamboo rafting) and scuba diving certification on Koh Tao (which is something that I've been wanting to do forever). Since my friend and I had only 2 weeks in Thailand, it was a really good deal. Everything worked out to be cheaper than it would be if I had planned everything myself. But if you have more time to explore Thailand on your own, then I recommend it doing it the backpacker way. Just go to hostel and learn as you go along.
So far so good in terms of places to go! I spent a month in Thailand, backpacking around and I hit every place you listed. Bangkok to the Islands- Islands to Phuket -Phuket to Chiang Mai/ Pai- Then returned to Bangkok.
As some of the above comments mention, they are touristy, but still, I wouldn't have changed my itinerary at all.
Touristy as they were, you can't help but enjoy what the areas have to offer.
The Full Moon Party was INSANE! As a raver, this was so much fun! The music/talent/food, everything was great. Just be careful, with as many alcohol fueled people as there were, the vibes weren't always as positive as I would have liked.
The island itself was my favorite. Wasn't too big, wasn't too small. Not very many cars so renting moto bikes was the way to go. Absolutely stunning to drive across the island when the sun set.
(Heres a link to my travel journal, linked to my Full Moon Party entry: http://www.xanga.com/Lv16/639240829/the-man-of-haad-salahd/ )
Krabi was one area I didn't see you mention. Great for scuba diving, but the landmass itself holds many a Wat. Tiger paw temple (I think) on the top of a mountain, 1300 vertical steps to the top. I thought I'd die before I made it, but what an experience.
Phuket was fun, I actually fell in love there! Hah!
Chiang Mai, didn't get to see too much, due to me having to take care of my travel partner (food poisoning. Stay away from the enchiladas!). The name of the wat escapes me, but its also on a mountain top, overlooking the city. At night it looks like its floating above the city, glowing gold.
Pai in the far north, a very laid back, small community. Almost a "hippie" village. Lots of reggae music, weekend long festivals. Great place to relax, and its off of the tourist route.
Bangkok was fun for what it was.
Tip: If you plan on doing some shopping, make sure its on your way out! Things really are as cheap as they are rumored to be!
I was iffy about Thailand before, but once I read your post I said Phucket, I'm going to Thailand because the island looks pretty nice. Maybe I'll go for an extended trip and tell my boss to Phucket.
I lived in Thailand for a year so here's what I've got for ya. I lived in Chiang Mai which yes is touristy but the shopping in Night Bizzar Market is pretty fantastic, known for being like the best market in Asia or Thailand or something like that. Keep in mind that they raise the prices a ton for tourists so bargain as much as possible. If you don't know how to bargain feel free to ask me. Like the other person said Airport Plaza is a really nice mall. Good place to go when you need air-condition or want to watch a movie.
Get a massage. It's soooo cheap! Do remember that many are not professionally trained so they could hurt your back or something; take your chances. But ya, do that. Or a pedicure/manicure, that's cheap as well. The food everywhere is pretty amazing. Not sure if you like spicy stuff but a lot is so if you don't want it hot make sure to say, "prik maay" or "prik nit noy." Everywhere you go there is always a place to eat, especially noodle shops. Sometimes the more sketchy it looks the better the food. If you see a lot of Thai eating there then that's a good sign. Eat as much as possible. Make sure to get sticky rice @ some point in time. Phuket is awesome! I went when there was a tropical storm hovering but still had a good time. If you want a better "island feel" go to Phi Phi Island or one of the others. Phuket is very touristy and slightly overpriced for Thailand but it is beautiful. Wear talcum powder, it cuts the sweating down like crazy! In the bigger cities and towns there are stores like Walmart called Carrefour or Lotus. You can get almost everything there that you could get in a western store. Transportation, if you take the song-tiaows (the trucks which have a covered back), in Chiang Mai the different colored truck, the different places it will take you. If you are going around the Chiang Mai gate area get on a red one. Bangkok, extra hot, dirt, crowded. I really don't know what to say about it b/c I didn't enjoy it at all. There are a lot of historical things to see though and the big mall there is massive and expensive but is kind of exciting. That would be something to see. There's the palace there and major temples those are good to see as well. I encourage you to go trekking if you're into that kind of stuff. A friend and I went on a 3 day trek west of Chiang Mai and it was $42 USD. We hiked, stayed in villages; rode elephants through the jungle for an hour and 1/2; went bamboo rafting; stayed at a waterfall camp. That was one of my greatest experiences. That's everything included (food and all). So it's a good price and you get to see/experience a lot, plus hanging out w/ people from other countries around a campfire talking was pretty awesome. They call it "the land of smiles" and yes the people are nice. Mostly it's b/c your a foreigner and b/c it's good karma for them to be nice to you. As far as spending, look at something and if it's not at least 1/2-less of what it would pay in the states, then they're trying to get ya. bargin bargin. Check out guest-houses, sometimes those are cheaper/nicer than hotels. The picture you have posted for Chiang Mai, waterfall/rocks... that is a fun place and there are many swimming/hiking spots. Always show respect for the King and the Royal Family. They stand when his picture comes up at the theater. Every home has his picture somewhere in it. You'll their picture everywhere. The people in Thailand are generous and they do want to make you happy. Be patient. Stand firm if you don't want something or feel uncomfortable. But ya, it's a great place. If want want or don't want something, ask at least 3 times. It's the culture to refuse at least 3 times. Eg. "Do you want a piece of gum?" They'll say "no". So ask 2 more times. After the 4th and they still say no then they're for real. That was what drove me crazy sometimes. If you have any questions feel free to ask! Have a blast!krystalchill24_7@xanga : Wow, thanks so much for the advices :) I'm going to Thailand this April too, and ur words are very usefull!!!
eat the pineapple on a stick from the street stands..words cannot even describe! or better yet, don't--b/c once you do, the vast majority of pineapples elsewhere will not measure up!
anyways, yea--the fruits are to die for! eat up! :)
oh, and watch out for men with large pythons--they try to put them over your shoulders to snap a photo and charge you...haha. unless you're into that kinda thing! i prefer holding a snake when i don't have the element of surprise of a huge moving mass thrown across my back, personally!
Ok just so we know.. Puhket does not look like that lol.
I've been to Phuket and Bangkok NUMEROUS times. I love both. Phuket, is quiet and nice if you're at one of the resorts. The beaches are wonderful and the food is to die for. There's a place on the beach that we went to almost daily. The nightlife downtown is pretty lively. I personally enjoy the cross-dresser shows. If you're up for something different they are hilarious and great. The shopping is great as well. There is a jewelry shop on one of the corners that's really bright and well lit and they have really nice purses in the back if you ask. There were so many shop-owners there who were so nice, I was there a year after the tsunami so they talked about that a lot, and it was a great experience.
Bangkok is a large city, very busy. I suggest shopping at MBK. I was there for an athletic event so I didn't get to do much more shopping but Bangkok is known for their silver. My mother and friends would often take one of the 12 dollar flights from Singapore to Bangkok just to shop for the day.
I never got to go to Chang Mai but my sister did and she loved it.
If you're looking to go anywhere else around Thailand, I suggest flying Tiger Airways to Singapore. It's extremely cheap to get there, and a completely different SE Asian experience. The food there is the best I've had in my entire life.
Go to The Island (x
@Shopgirl0393@xanga - So true! The fruit carts were soooo good! Can't tell you how many bags of pineapple I went through!
@ov3r_us3d@xanga - You've got me really excited for Chiang Mai. It's nice to hear about it from someone's first-hand experience. Thanks so much!
@littlepiggie818@xanga - Come to think of it, I've heard from somewhere that Koh Phi Phi might be better too. I'll check it out. Thanks! I plan to stay in a hostel while I'm there. Those are fun and you meet great travellers along the way.
You did a lot in Thailand so I'd say you got your money's worth. And how awesome to say you got your scuba diving certificate in Thailand. Congrats!
someone may have said this, but definitely get a massage. Where I stayed in Chiang mai had massage places like New Orleans has liquor stores.
@Lordv16@xanga - You're right. Everything in a country can be enjoyed, touristy or not. I read your post about the Full Moon Party. Awesome! I loved reading someone's first had experience. I'll definitely try to make it there. Thanks for sharing!
@krystalchill24_7@xanga - Thank you so much! I might just print out your whole comment and use it during my trip! You're awesome. And glad to have some insight from someone who's lived in Thailand.
I've been to Thailand but have never ventured outside of Bangkok. Phuket and Lopburi sound cool.
@Shopgirl0393@xanga - LOL about the surprising python men.
Oh, you're scaring me about the pineapples because after I ate fruit in Vietnam, no where else measured up and I was always disappointed after that. The same thing will probably happen to me when I eat the pineapple in Thailand.
But I will eat it.
@whitneyxxxx@xanga - I'm definitely going to take your advice and try flying Tiger Airways. $12? That's so awesome!
Thanks for suggesting the cross dressing shows. I think I'll make a plan to go see one.
