QOTD - A Foreign Language
How hard do you think it is to learn a foreign language? Do you know more than one language? If you could learn another language, what would it be?

I know Romanian and English nearly perfectly, and I've been learning German for 6 years, so I'm pretty good at that too... I've also studied French for a while, so that's all right. And a little Chinese, which I want to learn more of.
I think for me personally, languages are easy to learn... It's just if I actually do want to learn one, I can't only sit in class or something, I actually have to put my butt to work and read stuff in the language or even go to a country where it's spoken and all that cool stuff.
I'm the usual Tri-lingual... Filipino and English..and Spanish
I'm learning Hangeul right now.. ..It's a little hard for me but I know I can speak the language soon ... ^^
Quite hard, I did not start learning a foreign language until I started secondary school (age 11) we did French and German at our school for three periods over a week on each subject (double and a single) GCSE were two doubles either we did French or German (some people did both I think)
Sometimes I find it really hard to speak a foreign language FLUENTLY and CORRECTLY! I'm still trying my best with English though :)
I wanna know more than 3 languages, so I guess I'm going to learn Chinese and French soon, real soon :)
I'd like to learn a few different languages. Spanish (out of necessity), French, Russian, and maybe Japanese.
I know two, English and German, German I can read it and write it. Kind of dusty on the speaking of it, but I would love to learn another language and would like broaden my children horizons on another language as well.
The old joke: three languages = trilingual. two languages = bilingual. one language = American.
Probably Korean, since my job has sent me there four times (two - three weeks each) in the last four years.
I'm already pretty much a polyglot. I'm learning Arabic now.
I only know one and I would think it would be very hard for me to learn another. I would want to learn a very unusual one.
It's hard if you're not dedicated to learning and/or if you have a crappy teacher.
For me, it wasn't very hard to learn French (conversationally; I'm not quite fluent), and I know bits and pieces of American Sign Language, Polish and Spanish, too. I'd like to learn a couple others.
I'd really like to become fluent in ASL because when I was studying it, it felt far more natural to me than spoken languages. As an artist, I'm very much a visual-spacial-temporal person.
I've been taking Spanish classes for about seven years now and I am still far from fluent. I can understand a lot of the language, but I'm not sure I will ever be able to speak it fluently myself.
I doubt the possibility of true fluency in languages, other than the ones you learn early on in childhood.
I studied German throughout high school.
Spanish is my thing now.
However, I'm working on Mandarin. I grew up with some Cantonese, though.
How hard do you think it is to learn a foreign language?
Very, depending what it is and what age you start learning.
Do you know
more than one language?
Yes, English and Cantonese.
If you could learn another language, what would
it be?
Japanese.
i speak six to varying degrees- cantonese, shanghainese, english, mandarin, spanish, french. it's pretty easy for me to pick up the basics in a classroom setting but really speaking in these languages to other people is quite another matter
I speak english all the time, I know some french, and I can usually understand other people when they talk cantonese but I can't speak it fluently very well. I guess I should learn my own language lol >_<
I speak seven languages fluently, and I have three kind of down in the noob stages. When your father is a translator you know you're forced into learning these languages but I don't regret it.
Working on Farsi more!
im learning french and italian, if you really want to learn and focus its not really hard you just need patience and practice
I speak Slovenian (mother tongue), English, German, French and a little bit of Spanish. I would love to learn some more...Russian for example :)
i've been taking spanish class for years. in fact, i'm in ap spanish now -- but in reality, i feel i only know the basics and could only carry on very simple conversation with a lot of struggling.
i'm trying to learn tagalog. its easier cus i understand it well already, but the grammar becomes difficult. i think a person can learn a language easily as long as they surround themselves with an environment that provides it and if they are consistent. i became obsessed wit korean dramas, and i know a lot of basic phrases now that i've picked up. -___- of course they are really like.. "i love you. i like you. don't go. don't leave me. you wanna die?" but yea.
Hebrew and English perfectly. I want to learn Italian, Spanish and Jappanese too it might take a while, but I'll get there.
I speak english and took four years of spanish-and I still know nothing : (

I don't think it's hard to learn a language but the thing is you have to WANT to learn it, other wise you won't be proficient in it. Classes help but what'll really improve one's proficiency in a language is going to a country where it is spoken or being constantly around people who are native speakers of that language. English is my first language and I know Spanish fairly well, I want to go to Spanish-speaking countries and become really fluent in it. Eventually I would like to learn more languages like French, maybe an Arabian language, and possibly a Far East language such as Mandarin or something. The last two would probably be most difficult just because it would mean learning new alphabets. And as someone said earlier I'd like to learn ASL (American Sign Language) and it would be easier for me as well because I'm a spatial-visual person also because I dance and I learn easier through seeing things. yup!
God loves.
I'm taking Japanese 3 right now; I'm planning to go up to AP & possibly higher after hs..I know a little tagalog, but it's easier to listen..and I really want to learn korean but the hangul is sort of hard to grasp. oh, and I took Spanish 1 with Jap1 in 8th grade; Japanese was easier for me :P
My native language is English, and I'm nearly fluent in French. I'd really like to learn Italian. In junior high, I took a semester of German, and it was really fun, so I'd kind of like to start learning German again, too.
I think it's different for everyone. Though they say that once you know two, it gets easier to learn more.
I'm a senior and in AP Spanish Language. I've been taking Spanish since 7th grade and I am still nowhere near fluent.
And I think, for me, I won't be fluent until I spend a decent period of time in Spain or Mexico or somewhere where I am constantly around the language.
